Queens College Choral Society Celebrates 75th Anniversary Season with Baroque Masterworks

-- 75th Annual Winter Concert Features Vivaldi and Bach --

FLUSHING, NY, December 3, 2015 — To celebrate its 75th anniversary season, the Queens College Choral Society will perform Vivaldi’s Gloria and Bach’s Magnificat in concert on Saturday, December 12, at 8 pm in Colden Auditorium. Vivaldi’s Gloria holds special significance for the QC Choral Society: the group gave the work its American premiere in 1949. Paired with Bach’s Magnificat, this evening of choral works by Baroque masters will be a wonderful way to celebrate the holiday season.

The Choral Society will be accompanied by a full orchestra; vocal soloists will include sopranos Jennifer Russo and Elizabeth Tasch, mezzo-soprano Katharine Liu, tenor Gilad Paz, and baritone Sidney Outlaw. The program will also feature “Autumn” and “Winter” from Vivaldi’s popular Four Seasons, with British violinist Catharine Lawlor as soloist. The evening will conclude with a perennial favorite: Handel’s “Hallelujah Chorus” from Messiah. James John, Professor of Music and Music Director of the QCCS, will conduct.

The Choral Society is “a singing organization of and for the public, and the students and staff of Queens College.” QCCS is a treasure in the borough, and is unique in its diversity of singers: from high school musicians—through the high school outreach program—to singers who have performed with the Society for over 40 years. The Society typically gives two concerts each year with orchestra (in December and May) devoted to the great masterpieces of choral literature, such as Verdi’s Requiem, Handel’s Messiah, and Britten’s War Requiem. The QCCS has also performed premieres of many new works, including pieces composed by members of Queens College’s Aaron Copland School of Music.

Tickets are $20 and are available through the Kupferberg Center Box office at (718) 793-8080 or online at www.kupferbergcenter.org. Group discounts for high school students and teachers are also available. To take advantage of this offer, visit www.qcchoralsociety.org
