Queens College is Flagship School Offering Tuition-Free Coding Bootcamp for Alumni as Part of CUNY - Revature Partnership

-- Partnership is Projected to Create Over 2,000 Jobs in New York Over the Next Five Years --

Flushing, NY, October 4, 2016—A new tuition-free, industry-aligned coding bootcamp, exclusively for CUNY graduates, will make its debut on the Queens College campus this November through a strategic partnership between the City University of New York and Revature, a leading technology talent development company. The 12-week programs provide the opportunity to learn the latest enterprise-level, next-generation and niche technology skills at no cost. Students who complete the training are then employed by Revature and will receive industry certification and continuing education. The program is expected to train and hire more than 2,000 CUNY graduates over the next five years.

As the home of the just-launched Tech Incubator at Queens College (the borough’s first such incubator), the Tech Talent Pipeline Residency @ Queens, and with more undergraduates majoring in computer science than any other school in the New York area, Queens College is the ideal place to kick off the Revature program. It is also well-positioned to offer access to an extraordinarily skilled and ethnically diverse talent pool with about 85% of its alumni residing in the New York metropolitan area.

“Our academic strengths, city and university-wide partnerships, and the fact that we are one of the most diverse campuses in America make Queens College the ideal partner with which to spearhead this important initiative,” said President Félix Matos Rodríguez.

CUNY will also offer Revature’s custom online course training, RevaturePro, to all current CUNY students and alumni. These courses are designed for both non-technical and advanced students to learn enterprise-level programming skills at their own pace and receive dedicated support from Revature’s industry mentors. RevaturePro features free online training programs supporting all levels from beginner to advanced where students can learn Java, Microsoft.NET and other front-end development languages.

“CUNY is committed to supporting equal access to opportunity for all, regardless of background, means, race and gender,” said Ann Kirschner, Special Advisor to the Chancellor for Strategic Partnerships at CUNY. “In today’s world, opportunity means tech. Coding bootcamps are helping to narrow the enormous demand for technology professionals in New York and across the country—but are prohibitively expensive and out of reach for many students. In partnership with Revature, we are able to offer free online and on-site coding programs for CUNY graduates based solely on their ability and interest, not their financial means. We are particularly delighted to welcome Queens College as our first campus partner,” she said.

“We are proud to partner with CUNY to offer the most accessible, affordable and inclusive coding bootcamp in the country. Through this collaboration, we’re providing multiple pathways to rewarding careers in software development for many talented CUNY graduates. CUNY has one of the most diverse student bodies in the country, and this partnership will help us meet the growing technology needs of our corporate partners as they actively look for ways to build and harness the many noted benefits that diverse technology teams deliver,” said Joe Mitchell, Revature’s Senior Vice President of Academic Partnerships.
The first 12-week bootcamp will start November 14 at Queens College, with another one planned for CUNY’s School of Professional Studies Manhattan campus in January 2017. Revature is now accepting applications from CUNY graduates for both on-campus bootcamps. The application deadline for the first Queens College bootcamp is November 7.
