WHAT: The Aaron Copland School of Music Orchestra under the direction of Maurice Peress will present a rare complete performance of Bedřich Smetana’s Má Vlast (My Homeland), a work representative of the Czech struggle for independence and search for a unique identity.
WHEN: Thursday, April 30 at 8 p.m.
WHERE Bohemian National Hall, a designated New York City landmark Home to the Dvořák American Heritage Association (DAHA)
321 East 73rd Street, New York (between 1st and 2nd Avenues)
http://www.dvoraknyc.org/Home_Page.html

BACKGROUND: In 1874 Bedřich Smetana, “the father of Czechish music,” set out to create a body of work that celebrated the natural landscapes, history, native language, as well as the folk legends of Bohemia and Moravia. His compositions also embraced the Czech people’s fight for independence. Heard as a whole for the first time in 1882, Má Vlast was immediately acclaimed by the musical public. Smetana dedicated the work to the city of Prague, where Maestro Peress conducted the work with the Brno Orchestra in 1997.

Conductor Maurice Peress has had an illustrious international career. Selected by Leonard Bernstein to serve as assistant conductor of the New York Philharmonic in 1961, he went on to lead three American orchestras: Corpus Christi, Austin and the Kansas City Philharmonic. Maestro Peress joined the faculty of the Aaron Copland School of Music in 1989 and established a master of arts program for conductors.

Contact events@dvoraknyc.org to order tickets or purchase them at the door the night of the performance. General admission tickets are $20; $10 for students, senior citizens and Czech Center Club members.
