QUEENS COLLEGE STUDENTS, FACULTY AND ELECTED OFFICIALS MARCH
TO RAISE AWARENESS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

-- Survivors of Domestic Abuse Will Relate Their Stories --

WHAT: “Walk With Me,” a silent march by students, faculty, and staff in recognition of Domestic Violence (DV) Awareness Day in New York State. Queens College Assistant Provost June Bobb will introduce elected officials who will address this issue and programs and legislation in work to combat domestic violence in New York. Survivors of domestic violence will recount their struggles to rebuild their shattered lives. T-shirts decorated by students and DV victims with personal messages and statements will be hanging on a clothesline across the campus.
Marchers will carry homemade anti-DV posters and signs.

WHO: Queens College Assistant Provost June Bobb; Deputy Queens Borough President Karen Koslowitz; Assemblywomen Ellen Young and Audrey Pheffer; Councilman John Liu; Carmella Marrone, Executive Director of Queens College’s Women and Work, a job-training program that helps women in financial or emotional hardship re-enter the workforce; Mary Miller and Deborah Smith, DV survivors and members of Women and Work; Mr. Shahriar Asraf, president of the Queens College Women’s Center; and Gonul Asiker of the Queens College Student Association.

BACKGROUND:
The New York State Assembly-sponsored initiative of silent walks that take place simultaneously on college campuses across the state each October and the Clothesline Project were begun to bring attention to the problem of domestic violence. The Queens College event is sponsored by the Offices of the President, Vice President for Institutional Advancement, and Student Affairs; Peer Program; College Counseling and Resource Center; Student Life; Student Association; Women’s Center; Committee for Disabled Students; Health Services; Political Science Club; Women and Work; and the Science Organization of Minority Students.
