Media interviews and photo ops with the honorees, including Ms. Drescher, and President Félix V. Matos Rodríguez will take place from 6:30 to 7:10 pm sharp. An RSVP to Maria.Matteo@qc.cuny.edu or (718) 997-5593 is required by 5 pm on Monday, May 1, for access to honorees.
FLUSHING, N.Y., April 26, 2017— Begun in 1990 to honor alumni whose professional success and dedication to philanthropy and public service embody the college’s motto, “Discimus ut serviamus: We learn so that we may serve,” this year’s Queens College Gala will honor three women whose work has enriched the arts, education and community revitalization, and philanthropy. In a celebration that coincides with the college’s 80th anniversary, Emmy nominated-actress, author and advocate for cancer awareness Fran Drescher will be recognized with the college’s Lifetime Achievement Award; foreign language educator and community revitalization activist Evelyn M. Strauch will receive the President’s Award; and philanthropist Muriel Sapir Greenblatt will be honored with the Alumni Award. Juliet Papa, award-winning 1010 WINS radio reporter, will serve as host and emcee for the third consecutive year.

The Gala is the college’s principal fundraiser, raising over $1 million in scholarship funds for a richly diverse student body representing more than 150 nations. Queens College students also play a role in the Gala as performers, artists, and guest liaisons, giving them an opportunity to interact with the honorees and other alumni in attendance.

Fran Drescher
Fran Drescher captured national attention in the title role of “The Nanny” as a smart fashionista from Queens who plays Mary Poppins to British ex-pats in Manhattan, eventually marrying her rich, handsome employer. Drescher—as star, creator and executive producer—broke new ground with her achievement, still uncommon for a woman in Hollywood today. Her screen credits include Ragtime and This Is Spinal Tap, and she was executive producer of the comedy Beautician and the Beast, starring opposite Timothy Dalton. As a cancer survivor who documented her journey in her New York Times best-selling memoir Cancer Schmancer, Drescher advocates for prevention and early detection through her nonprofit organization of the same name. The foundation provides free mammograms to low-income women who are underserved or uninsured. Another initiative, Detox Your Home, shows people how to lead healthier lives and reduce their cancer risk. In recognition of her work, Drescher—who is also an advocate for gay civil liberties—was named a U.S. State Department Envoy for Women’s Health, traveling internationally to visit heads of state, hospitals, local non-governmental organizations, American military bases, and cancer patients. Muriel Sapir Greenblatt
Muriel Sapir Greenblatt earned her degree in Elementary & Early Childhood Education at Queens College in 1954. As a consultant, she advised Chase Manhattan Bank on how to accommodate elderly customers, recommending a change in banking hours and setting up one-on-one appointments so that they wouldn’t have to wait in line. Today, client relations at many full-size banks can be attributed to Greenblatt’s ideas. Following the completion of an MS in geriatric counseling at Long Island University, Greenblatt returned to QC and founded the You and Your Aging Parent program. She has held leadership roles at her synagogue and with the Great Neck chapter of Hadassah, and also works to strengthen connections between her alma mater and the local community. Another of Greenblatt’s initiatives was setting up an annual program that brings Queens College professors to North Shore Towers for a day to give lectures to alums and their guests. Evelyn M. Strauch
After graduating from Queens College in 1960, Evelyn M. Strauch studied at the Sorbonne and Columbia University, and then devoted 30 years to teaching French, Spanish, Russian, and English as a Foreign Language. Her influence extended beyond her own classrooms, with Strauch establishing foreign language departments and designing curricula and teaching materials for public and private schools. Equally committed to revitalizing distressed urban and rural areas, Strauch spent two decades as chair of community relations for the Community Development Support Collaborative, which assisted nonprofits trying to revive struggling neighborhoods in Washington, D.C. In addition, she served for 12 years on the board of Washington Grantmakers, a member organization dedicated to philanthropy in the nation’s capital. Today, Strauch is on the boards of the Local Initiatives Support Corporation, which invests funding, strategy, and know-how in low-income communities around the country, and the Inova Health System Foundation, which supports the Inova network of hospitals and health care facilities in Northern Virginia and metropolitan Washington, D.C.
