--A Musical Performance of The Ghetto Chronicles and an Exhibition of Work by Young African-American Artists Among Other Scheduled Events --
FLUSHING, NY, February 4, 2013—A lecture on humanitarian design in architecture; the significance of President Obama’s reelection; an art exhibition by African-American youth, and an update presented by students on the state of Haiti’s recovery are planned in celebration of Black History Month at Queens College.
Montgomery Wilkinson, an architectural technologist and member of the firm responsible for completing the Freedom Tower at One World Trade Center, will lecture on Architecture, Community, and Us on Wednesday, February 13, from 12:15 to 1:30 pm, in Rosenthal Library, room 230. A volunteer with Architecture for Humanity New York, Wilkinson will focus on his research and experience in community-based initiatives within the architectural realm. A strong advocate of humanitarian design, planning and outreach, he is also at work on the new Mt. Sinai Center for Science and Medicine as part of the architectural team at Skidmore, Owings and Merrill LLP. Wilkinson’s other efforts include curating a 2012 Queens College exhibit on Oscar Devereaux Micheaux, the first major African-American filmmaker of the 20th-century.
New York State Assemblyman Jeffrion Aubry will explore the Significance of Obama’s Reelection on Thursday, February 14, 2013, at 6:30 pm in Rosenthal Library, room 230. Assemblyman Aubry has represented District 35—which includes East Elmhurst, parts of Corona, Elmhurst, LeFrak City, Woodside, and Jackson Heights—since 1992. As chairman of the Committee on Correction, he successfully championed the 2009 legislation that significantly reformed the Rockefeller drug laws in New York State, and also led the fight to ensure that prisoners suffering from serious mental illness receive needed treatment. Among his many efforts, he serves as chairman of the Board of Justice Center, a national organization providing technical assistance to states developing data-driven, consensus-supported criminal justice policies to reduce crime and decrease the cost of incarceration nationwide. His awards include the Martin Luther King Drum Major Justice Award and a 2005 Outstanding Contribution to Legislation Award from the Criminal Justice Selection of the NYS Bar Association, among others.

- A Haitian Students Association (HSA) update on Haiti: Three Years after the Quake, Thursday, February 28, at 8 pm, in the Student Union, 4th floor.
