Since 1999 Women and Work has partnered with Queens College to address the issues of violence against women through events and awareness month activities. However, we plan to heighten our endeavors on 06 April when Queens College President James Muyskens proclaims the college to be a “Community Working to Promote Awareness About Violence Against Women and Girls.”
We will actuate our commitment by calling upon the talents of faculty, staff, and students to address some of the critical issues, not in one-day events, but with everyday changes. Women and Work will offer regularly scheduled presentations, learning events, and direct service workshops throughout the year, which will be open to the community-at-large.
The reading of the Proclamation will be followed by the launching of our first event, the “White Ribbon Campaign.” Join us when QC President James Muyskens, CUNY Vice-Chancellor Frank Sanchez, Dean Anthony Tamburri (Calandra Italian American Institute), and Jon Jankus (Alumni) become the first men to take the “White Ribbon Pledge,” promising never to commit, condone, or remain silent about violence against women and girls. They will receive their “White Ribbons” from a Women and Work participant and domestic violence survivor. These men will be the first to sign our “UNiTE to SAY-NO to Violence” Petition, which will be forwarded to the United Nations on 31 May 2011.
Commissioner Yolanda Jimenez, the Mayor’s Office to Combat Domestic Violence, will be a featured speaker and her office will be partnering with Women and Work and Queens College in the “White Ribbon Campaign.”
This event will culminate with a talk by Kathleen Barry, Professor Emerita Penn State University. She will discuss her latest book “Unmaking War, Remaking Men.” The talk will be followed by a Q&A. Books will be available for sale and signing.
