Introduction to Financial Aid at Queens College

Many of our students need some sort of financial aid to help pay the costs of attending college or graduate school. In determining what you will need during your attendance at Queens College, keep in mind that our tuition is significantly lower than most other institutions. Financial Aid at Queens College can help pay more than just your tuition and fees bills.You will, of course, have many additional expenses related to your education, such as books and supplies, transportation, lunch, room and board at home, or housing and food on your own.

The Financial Aid Office at Queens College helps eligible students receive Federal and New York State Financial Aid, in the form of grants, loans, and part-time work. Aid is awarded for one academic year based on information on your annual FAFSA and TAP applications, which determine financial need, using standard formulas and standard expense budgets.

Who is Eligible to Receive Financial Aid at Queens College?

Some of the common eligibility requirements for Federal and NY State grants, loans, and work are listed below.  More information is  included  on our program description page.

Students must list a CUNY School on the FAFSA application, and QC on the TAP application, and resolve all application problems:
If you did not list any CUNY school on your application, we will not be able to evaluate you for aid or pay you here.Either adjust your college code yourself with the processor or bring your SAR to the Financial Aid Office and we will make the change for you.You must also resolve any problems related to your application and submit any required / requested documentation.
Be sure to check the status of your aid applications and resolve any edits or request for information as soon as possible.

Financial Need and General Requirements: Most of our aid is awarded based on financial need. Those aid programs that do not depend on financial need require the filing of the financial aid applications..The student must also meet other requirements related to selective service registration, immigration / citizenship status, and not be in default on a student loan.

Some of the general requirements for Federal aid are in the Federal Student Guide on the US Department of Education's web site at http://studentaid.ed.gov/students/publications/student_guide/index.html#title .

Some of the general requirements for NY State TAP are on the web at http://hesc.com/bulletin.nsf/0/3ca243796a98d19d85256d88006b4ad3?OpenDocument&a=CA.

Enrollment and Registration Status:

  • be matriculated in a degree program;
  • meet satisfactory academic standards specific to the federal Title IV financial aid programs and the NY State grant programs;
  • be registered at an eligible status for the program for the semester.
Some of the programs also have additional requirements related to: 1) payment after non-attendance, grades, or withdrawals have been posted; 2) Summer-only, Summer and Fall only, and Fall-only payments; and 3) payments after the end of the semester.

Funding:
There is limited funding for SEOG grants, Perkins Loans, and Work-Study. Early filers have the best chance.

Change in Status:

-->-->-->Variations in your program can affect your eligibility for financial aid.Going on Study Abroad, taking classes at another school, various changes to your enrollment status, or withdrawal from classes can change the amount of the award, make you ineligible for a current or future award, or cause you to have to repay some of the money already received.<-- <-- <-- Contact a Financial Aid Counselor before you take these actions; we want you to be aware of any implications and possible changes to your aid eligibility.In some cases there may be things you must do to assure your eligibility.

Mid-Year Transfers to Queens College:
Ask in the Financial Aid Office for special instructions related to receiving your financial aid at Queens College.Special issues include but are not limited to: FAFSA and TAP college code changes; dropping courses at other school; canceling aid at other school; which programs transfer and which will not; how to assure that transferable aid transfers; understanding the registration, billing and aid processes at QC.  Many of these are described  on this site on our transfer information page.

Students Currently Receiving Aid Who Are Applying to Graduate Schools: The cost of applying to many graduate schools can become overwhelming.  Check each school's application materials (as well as each application service's materials) to see if they offer an application fee waiver process for their application fee.  If they do, they may ask for information from your undergraduate financial aid office documenting your current financial aid status.  If this is the case, bring the school's request for information to the QC Financial Aid Office.  Follow the other school's information to the letter, or they may not accept your admissions application because it will be incomplete.

Note:
Students in a Ph.D. program at the Graduate Center should file for aid through the Graduate Center.  Students at CUNY Law School at Queens College should file for aid through the Law School.  Students on permit to / visiting Queens College should file for aid through their home school; more information for permit /visiting students is on this site.
