Too Good to be True

Be careful of offers that look too good to be true.

They probably are, and are designed to help you part easily with your hard earned money.
  • Don't pay anyone to complete and file your aid application for you.  Fill out as much as you can, and if you are having problems, ask us for help.  If you get to a web site that requires payment for filing your aid application, you have reached the wrong website --- try again.  The correct FAFSA web site is http://www.fafsa.ed.gov .
  • Don't pay to find scholarships.  There are many free tools that will be just as successful.  See our Finding Other Sources... page at http://www.qc.edu/FAO/scholar.php .
  • Use the same cautions you use regularly on the web when you do a web-based scholarship search.  Safeguard your privacy while still giving enough information for the scholarship search to be useful.  If you don't feel comfortable entering personal information requested by a website, don't do it. See tips at http://onguardonline.gov/index.html for how to handle your personal information on line.
  • ATMs are convenient, but sometimes they're too easy, for many reasons.  Watch ATM service fees (both at the ATM you're using and at your own bank - both may charge!), and be especially aware of additional service fees often charged for stamps when stamps are offered at an ATM.
  • Cell phone plans usually have unbelievably high charges if you go over what the plan covers.  Be sure you understand what's in your plan and what isn't --- or what can be covered but only with an automatic extra charge.  Coverage areas are an issue too, and roaming areas may surprise you and charges add up quickly.  Some advice from the FCC is at http://www.fcc.gov/cgb/consumerfacts/cellcoverage.html .
