Mission Statement
The Mission of the Office of Minority Affairs & Pre-Professional Advisement is to enable Queens College to attract, nurture, retain, and graduate an ethnically diverse student body and to encourage and assist students of color with preparations for their careers and graduate and professional schooling.
The Office of Minority Student Affairs & Pre-Professional Advisement promotes collaboration with academic and administrative units as well as student groups at the college to ensure effective outreach toward, support of and sensitivity to the needs of minority students.
Objectives
The Office promotes:
- Meaningful dialogues across ethnic and cultural lines while providing support for single group interest.
- Access to higher education and other retention efforts which enhance the success, and educational and professional development of all culturally diverse students, particularly those from underrepresented groups.
- Programs to the larger Queens community which enhance the community involvement and academic mission of Queens College students, staff and faculty through programming, symposia, internships, and skills development activities.
- Guidance, training and support to other campus units towards the accomplishment of a vision of equity, equality, and diversity.
Services
- Course and major selection
- Assistance with academic appeals
- Nomination for scholarships, competitive academic programs and internships
- Provides current and “insider information” of value to pre-health and pre-law students
- Assistance with preparations and applications for careers and graduate and professional schooling
- Make available resources at little or no cost to pre-professional students
- Provide access to recruiters for pre-professional schools & exposure to professional schools
- Conducts or provides access to workshops that teach time management and studying/test-taking skills
- Provides counseling and convenes Support/focus groups
All counseling and support group meetings are confidential.
