 Initial Certificate

The Initial Certificate is the entry-level teaching certificate for anyone who has completed a New York State teacher preparation program, or equivalent coursework and experience.  All candidates applying for their first Initial Certification must have completed a NYS Registered Program and receive an Institutional Recommendation.​


  • A certificate of this type is issued as the entry-level certificate for classroom teachers (issued in specific subject/grade titles) and the entry-level certificate for the School Building Leader (SBL)


  • Valid for five years

  • Professional Certificate

 Application Fee:

  • $50 based on completion of a New York State approved program (with Institutional Recommendation)
  • $100 using all other pathways
Paper Certificate is NOT printed at the time of issuance. Verify this certification in the TEACH System.
Holders of this type of certificate may apply for a printed certificate.

 Time Extension

NON-REFUNDABLE fee of $50 is required for each request. A time extension application will not be evaluated until the fee requirement and a TEACH online application are completed. Maintain all supporting documentation for your files as time extension applications may be audited. Applications for time extensions will not be accepted prior to seven months before the expiration date of the certificate.

        Extension to a certificate effective March 14, 2017
The time validity of an expired Initial  certificate may be extended for three years from the date the certificate expired, if one of the conditions below applies to the certificate holder during the validity period of the certificate:

  • The certificate holder is on leave from his/her teaching duties because of childbearing, child rearing, serious illness, or extended illness.
  • The certificate holder is serving with the Peace Corps or other volunteer organization.
  • The certificate holder’s service as a teacher has been discontinued as a result of abolishment of teaching position(s) in the school district in which employed.
  • The certificate holder, because of extreme hardship or other circumstances beyond his/her control, was unable to complete the requirements for the Permanent or Professional certificate in a timely manner, excluding normal family commitments or inconvenience.

  • Fingerprint Clearance
