 New GRE Requirements for Teacher Education Programs


The New York State Education Transformation Act of 2015 requires graduate-level Teacher
Education and Educational Leadership programs to establish rigorous admissions selection
criteria geared to predicting applicants’ academic success in those programs. In accordance
with these new regulations, Queens College has amended its admission requirements such
that individuals who apply to any program leading to New York State certification in
classroom teaching and/or in educational leadership will need to submit their Graduate
Record Examination (GRE) scores to Queens College as part of their application. Please see this document for further details:

Master of Science in Elementary Education with Bilingual Extension 

Program Requirements

The Master of Science in Elementary Education Degree with a Bilingual Extension is designed for teachers that have their NYS Certificate in Elementary Education 1-6. The MSED with bilingual extension allows teachers to obtain their professional certificate, their Master's and the bilingual extension.

Admission requirements and prerequisites

To be admitted in this program, applicants are required to:

  • Hold a current NYS Initial Certificate in Childhood Education 1-6.
  • Hold a bachelor’s degree with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
  • Be proficient in a language other than English. This proficiency must be in the language in which the applicant is seeking the bilingual extension 
  • Submit Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores to Queens College as part of their application. Please see this document for further details:

Upon the completion of this program and documented proof of experience in a Bilingual Setting, candidates are eligible for the NYS Bilingual Extension to the Certificate in Childhood Education 1-6.
