Program Eligibility

TOC is open to all academically qualified students who meet application requirements and priorities:
  • Be a New York State Resident*

  • Be enrolled as a full time students at Queens College, or accepted as an entering or transfer student to Queens College*
    • Undergraduate students enrolled for 12+cr./semester
    • Graduate students enrolled for 9+cr./semester
    • Working to earn initial teaching certification (currently certified individuals are not eligible)
  • Be enrollment in /or track to enroll in a QC teacher preparation program leading to initial certification*

  • Maintain a 3.0 GPA throughout the program
    • Minimum application GPA of 2.75 for undergraduate students
    • Minimum  application GPA of 3.0 for graduate students & GRE score

  • Historically underrepresented and economically disadvantaged individuals in the teaching profession**
  • Agree to complete a cumpulsory internship working in publics schools in district 27 or 28 or 20 during 2-3 semesters (5hrs/wk minimum)
    • Internships take place during semesters in advance of the student teaching stage of the teacher preparation program
  • Agree to participate in monthly professional development workshops presented by the
    Department of Education
  • Agree to actively engage in the Queens College Education Club to develop within a peer learning community
  • Commit to a job teaching in a culturally diverse and high needs NYC public school* in Queens districts 27, 28 or 29**, upon successful graduation and teacher certification.
    • Long term work* is required in a NYC high needs school*** after successful graduation and initial certification
