Meal Planning & Meal Management in the Italian Family

This course provides students with the opportunity to delve into a deep understanding of the cultural significance of foods in Italian family meals, both through educational and experiential components. The course examines the development, structure, and maintenance of the Italian family throughout history. Students will compare and examine social issues associated with the study of Italian families. During workshops students will evaluate different regional meals and prepare examples of Southern, Central, and Northern family dishes. Throughout the course, students will be accommodated with Italian families and will be responsible for preparing nine meals with the family.    




Location: Rome and Florence, Italy

NY departure and return dates: June 21 - July 19

Arrive in ROME morning of June 22nd

Course: 7 credits,  (6 FNES and 1 Italian Culture)

Faculty: Apicius

Housing: With a host family

Program Costs

Cost (includes all expenses below except airfare): $4500

CUNY tuition (for in-state, matriculated undergraduates): $1715

QC program fee: $400

Travel insurance: $37 

Consolidated fee (includes Tuition differential, Housing, Student and Lab Fees): $2348

Total cost with airfare: $5500

Airfare: $1000 (estimate)

Additional costs:

Minimum budget for meals and personal expenses of $20 to $25 per day (approximately $600)

Programs are open to all undergraduate students from all CUNY campuses (unless restricted by level of study, language fluency, or other program criteria). Travel on Fridays and some Saturdays for some programs.
