American Studies-Welcome Letter
Dear Queens College Student,
Thank you for your interest in American Studies. This exciting field offers the opportunity to explore not only the United States, but also the histories, societies, and arts of all the countries of the western hemisphere. Our course offerings and program activities reflect our interest in ethnic and cultural diversity both within and outside of the borders of the United States.
American Studies is an interdisciplinary field, meaning that we consider our chosen subjects using the methods of insights of more than one academic discipline or set of theoretical approaches. As Professor Bette Weidman, who skillfully directed the American Studies program for many years, observed: “Interdisciplinarity is risky, but rewarding.” Being able to study a subject from different perspectives is a critical thinking skill that our program helps you to develop and one that is useful in the “real world” as well. American Studies students find that their studies are relevant in any number of careers such as education, government, law, public service, and social work, to name a few.
Most important, American Studies will help you to think about the work you want to do in the world and the different routes you might follow to reach it. American Studies provides an introduction to history, sociology, anthropology, verbal, plastic, and performing arts, and environmental science, allowing you to gain a true liberal arts education. In consultation with the Director, you shape your studies to satisfy your own intellectual curiosity. Chances are that your combination of courses will be unique to you, a personalized major reflecting your intellectual growth and your commitments.
At every step of the way, I am ready to help with advice and support. Please be in touch with any and all questions.
Sincerely,
Kristin Celello
Director, American Studies Program
