Post Master's Advanced Certificate Additional Certification in Childhood Education (Grades 1-6)

Overview:
This 12 credit post-master’s advanced certificate program provides an expedited path to meet New York State requirements for certification in Childhood Education (Grades 1-6). This program is for persons who are looking to extend their initial certification in Early Childhood Education (Birth-Grade 2) to include Childhood Education (Grades 1-6).
 
Who This Program Is For:
This program is for persons who hold a master’s degree and are certified in Early Childhood Education (Birth-Grade 2). Persons who have not earned a master’s degree in education or do not hold an initial teaching certification in Early Childhood Education (Birth-Grade 2) should apply to the MAT in Childhood Education (Grades 1-6).
 
Program Requirements:
The Additional Certification in Childhood Education (Grades 1-6) program consists of four courses (12 credits), one of which is a practicum in an elementary classroom. Students are expected to maintain a B average in the program.
 
Required Courses:
EECE 545 Social Studies in the Elementary School (3 cr.)
EECE 550 Mathematics in the Elementary School (3 cr.)
EECE 555 Science in the Elementary School (3 cr.)
EECE 567 Practicum in Childhood Education (3 cr.)
 
Certification:
Completion of this program and all New York State requirements for certification leads to recommendation by the Division of Education for NYS Initial & Professional Certification in Childhood Education (Grades 1-6). Students should contact the Certification Office for up-to-date information on NYS certification requirements.
 
Other Information:
This program is only offered in the spring semester. Students must enroll full-time and complete the program in one semester. Program courses are not offered in the fall semester.
 
To Apply:
Applicants must meet the following admissions requirements:
  • Have an earned master’s degree in education with a GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Have NYS certification in Early Childhood Education (Birth-Grade 2)
  • Submit two letters of recommendation
  • Submit a 500 word essay
