Post Master’s Advanced Certificate Literacy Education (Birth - Grade 6)

This program will not be accepting applicants for the 2023-2024 academic year while we develop a new program to align with recent changes in New York State requirements for certification in Literacy. A revised program leading to the new Literacy (All Grades) certificate is expected to be offered for the 2024-2025 academic year. Please check back in the spring of 2024 for more information.
 
Overview:
This 15 credit post-master’s advanced certificate program leads to the New York State certificate in Literacy (Birth-Grade 6). Students in this program take coursework that prepares them to understand the language and literacy needs of diverse learners, plan specialized and individualized literacy instruction, engage critically with current issues in the field of literacy education, and support other teachers and professionals in the improvement of literacy instruction in schools. The program is completed in one year and includes a semester-long literacy practicum with children.
 
Who This Program Is For:
This program is for persons who have earned a master’s degree in education and hold an initial certification in Early Childhood Education (B-2) or Childhood Education (Grades 1-6), and who are looking to extend their certification to include Literacy (Birth-Grade 6). Persons who have not earned a master’s degree in education or do not hold an initial teaching certificate in Early Childhood Education (B-2) or Childhood Education (Grades 1-6) should apply to the MSEd in Literacy Education (Birth-Grade 6) or the MAT in Childhood Education (Grades 1-6) or Early Childhood Education (B-2).
 
Program Requirements:

The Post Master’s Advanced Certificate Program in Literacy Education program consists of five courses (15 credits) including one semester of practicum. To continue in the program, students must maintain a B average and receive no grade lower than B- in any course.

Required Courses:

EECE 764 Instruction and Assessment Across the Curriculum for Bilingual Learners (3 cr.)

EECE 801 The Role of the Literacy Specialist (3 cr.)

EECE 803 Assessment and Instruction I (3 cr.)

EECE 804 Assessment and Instruction II (3 cr.)

EECE 805 Practicum (3 cr.)

 
Certification:
Completion of this program and all New York State requirements for certification leads to recommendation by the School of Education for New York State Initial & Professional Certification in Literacy (Birth-Grade 6). Students should contact the Teacher Certification Office for up-to-date information on New York State certification requirements.

To Apply:

Applicants must meet the following admissions requirements:

· Hold an earned master’s degree in education, or expect to complete a master’s degree in education by the program start

· Have NYS or equivalent initial certification in Early Childhood Education (B-6) or Childhood Education (Grades 1-6), or expect to receive certification by the program start

· Submit one letter of recommendation

· Submit a 500 word essay explaining your interest in the program

· Additional requirements are specified on the application form

Applicants are accepted for fall admission only and may enter the program only as matriculating students.
