Post Master’s Advanced Certificate Literacy Education (Birth - Grade 6)
This 15 credit post-master’s advanced certificate program leads to the New York State certificate in Literacy (Birth-Grade 6). Students in this program take coursework that prepares them to understand the language and literacy needs of diverse learners, plan specialized and individualized literacy instruction, engage critically with current issues in the field of literacy education, and support other teachers and professionals in the improvement of literacy instruction in schools. The program is completed in one year and includes a semester-long literacy practicum with children.
This program is for persons who have earned a master’s degree in education and hold an initial certification in Early Childhood Education (B-2) or Childhood Education (Grades 1-6), and who are looking to extend their certification to include Literacy (Birth-Grade 6). Persons who have not earned a master’s degree in education or do not hold an initial teaching certificate in Early Childhood Education (B-2) or Childhood Education (Grades 1-6) should apply to the MSEd in Literacy Education (Birth-Grade 6) or the MAT in Childhood Education (Grades 1-6) or Early Childhood Education (B-2).
The Post Master’s Advanced Certificate Program in Literacy Education program consists of five courses (15 credits) including one semester of practicum. To continue in the program, students must maintain a B average and receive no grade lower than B- in any course.
