This examination consists of selected-response items and constructed-response items which share scenario-based stimulus material in order for a student to formulate a response. The competencies covered in the examination are Diverse Student Populations, English Language Learners, Students with Disabilities/Other Special Learning Needs, Teacher Responsibilities and School-Home Relationships. The EAS measures a prospective teacher’s enhanced, collective knowledge in relation to individual students’ distinct circumstances. These circumstances present themselves in the forms of difficult family situations, culture and individual needs, socioeconomic circumstances, and diverse family and/or nontraditional living situations. A strong understanding of each student’s situation promotes a sense of community in the classroom.

The EAS also explores knowledge of strategies for engaging in self-reflection to strengthen student interactions, of research or evidence-based strategies, working effectively with students in reference to all cultures, backgrounds, genders, sexual orientation, and living environments, and for those for whom English is a second language. The test touches on giftedness instruction, fair classroom assessment practices, learning from culturally diverse perspectives, promoting a positive student experience, working collaboratively within the school and community-based environment, as well as creating and planning strategies for a safe, supportive and positive classroom environment, which encompasses all students – including those with special learning needs and English Language Learners. Our EAS review course will focus on the reading of general directions, sample test question review in each distinctive discipline, class discussion of test topics, best practice strategies, collaborative learning, correct response review, written response review, introduction to performance characteristics/score scale response tables, as well as test-taking techniques and time management essentials in a computerized testing environment.

This course is 20 hours. Queens College and Townsend Harris High School faculty have developed this program for the past five years and will offer training and materials on how to guide students to develop research topics, generate reading lists, conduct college-level research, compose a research paper, and transform the writing into a professional presentation for an academic setting. Sessions will include resources for implementation, scaffolds for meeting the needs of various learners including students with disabilities and English language learners, and suggestions for scaling the project to fit other grade levels, courses, or timelines. Faculty who complete all sessions are eligible to receive 5 CTLE credits. Additionally, participating faculty are encouraged to have their students submit proposals to present at the 2020 Humanities Symposium to be held in May at Queens College. Five CTLE hours will be awarded to each student for a registration and tuition fee of $55.00 per student.

This course is 7 hours. Tuition fee: $55 (No Reg.
