How are the courses I teach part of a student\u2019s development? How can I create a general education course that embodies the liberal arts tradition in a way that will stay with students long after they graduate?<\/p>\n<p>As faculty, you can create that unique class by:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Proposing a\u00a0<strong>Pathways course <\/strong>(see below)<\/li>\n<li>Proposing a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.qc.cuny.edu\/academics\/gened\/writing\/\"><strong>Writing course<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<li>Contributing to the General Education conversation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; text_font=&#8221;Open Sans||||||||&#8221; text_font_size=&#8221;15px&#8221; header_4_font=&#8221;Open Sans|600||||||#000000|&#8221; header_4_text_color=&#8221;#000000&#8243; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Proposing a Pathways Course<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Participation in General Education allows you to collaborate with other faculty, connect your research to your teaching, and design innovative pedagogies.<\/p>\n<p>The process begins by preparing a proposal (see below), which gets submitted to the co-chairs of the General Education Council (GEC). The council then reviews the proposal to ensure it conforms to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qc.cuny.edu\/academics\/gened\/slos\/\"><strong>Pathways Student Learning Outcomes (PLOs)<\/strong><\/a> for its category. The Senate\u2019s Undergraduate Curriculum Committee (UCC) then has to approve it, at which point it goes to the Academic Senate for their approval. College Option Courses go into effect once approved by the Academic Senate. CUNY Common Core Proposals must be further approved by the CCCRC (CUNY Common Core Course Review Committee). Once they approve it, it has to be submitted to the CUNY Board of Trustees for final approval, and once they do so, it gets entered into CUNYfirst and becomes official.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Committee acronyms:<\/strong><br \/>GEC: General Education Council<br \/>UCC: Undergraduate Curriculum Committee<br \/>CCCRC: CUNY Common Core Review Committee<br \/>BOT: CUNY Board of Trustees<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; text_font=&#8221;Open Sans||||||||&#8221; text_font_size=&#8221;15px&#8221; header_4_font=&#8221;Open Sans|600||||||#000000|&#8221; header_4_text_color=&#8221;#000000&#8243; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;]<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Preparing a Proposal<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>To prepare a proposal:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Pick the Pathways designation you are going for.<\/strong> You\u2019ll need to look at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qc.cuny.edu\/academics\/gened\/slos\/\"><strong>Pathways Student Learning Outcomes (PLOs)<\/strong><\/a>. Each Pathways category has its own set of targeted learning objectives (PLOs\u2014Pathways Learning Outcomes). For every Pathways course, the PLOs should be included in the syllabus, and appropriate assessment activities should be included in the coursework to ensure that students are assimilating the concepts the course is designed to address.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Align course activities and assessments to the required set of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qc.cuny.edu\/academics\/gened\/slos\/\">PLOs<\/a>.<\/strong> In the syllabus, it must be clear how the course activities support claims that students will achieve the required set of Pathways SLOs for the designation. Be sure to indicate how students will be assessed for various course activities, and be sure the syllabus states how course grades are computed. Note that this syllabus is considered a sample for the course. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qc.cuny.edu\/academics\/academic-senate\/curriculum-changes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Templates for each of the Pathways designations can be found here<\/strong><\/a>.\n<ul>\n<li>Strategy: don\u2019t explain how important the course is. Rather, show how the students will achieve the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qc.cuny.edu\/academics\/gened\/slos\/\"><strong>PLOs<\/strong><\/a>, cross-referencing the syllabus in meaningful ways. (\u201cThe {assignment, activity, or test} will be graded on how well students demonstrate {assessment criterion}.\u201d). There should be one assessment per Student Learning Outcome at a minimum, and it should be readily apparent from the proposal and the syllabus which outcomes are met by which assignments, and how they are assessed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Submit the proposal<\/strong> to the Co-Chairs of the General Education Council:\u00a0 <a href=\"mailto:christine.ramadhin@qc.cuny.edu\">Dr. Christine Ramadhin<\/a> and <a href=\"mailto:yan.sun@qc.cuny.edu\">Dr. Yan Sun.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; text_font=&#8221;Open Sans||||||||&#8221; text_font_size=&#8221;15px&#8221; header_4_font=&#8221;Open Sans|600|||on|||#000000|&#8221; header_4_text_color=&#8221;#000000&#8243; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Timeline for approval<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Proposals are first submitted to the General Education Council, who reviews them on a rolling basis.\u00a0 Proposals approved and forwarded to the UCC by the first of every month will be reviewed at that month\u2019s UCC meeting, and, if approved, considered by the Senate the following month.\u00a0 The CCCRC meets twice per semester, and Common Core Proposals are forwarded to them after Senate approval.\u00a0 The approval process takes several months\u2014Common Core courses initially proposed in a given semester will likely not get full approval until the following semester, with implementation the semester following that.\u00a0 If you propose a course in fall, full approval will generally be possible only for courses offered the following fall.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You can learn more about the process for curriculum changes here: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qc.cuny.edu\/academics\/academic-senate\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/126\/2025\/12\/Guide-to-Curriculum-Changes-December-2025.pdf\">Guide to Curriculum Changes (updated Dec 2025)<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][\/et_pb_section]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Teaching GenEd at QC \u201cThe most successful teacher is he who makes himself superfluous by developing in his students the ability to educate themselves.\u201d \u2014Dr. Paul Klapper, 1939 For faculty, General Education is an opportunity to pause and to think: How is the college experience also a transformative experience \u2013 an awakening \u2013 for students?
