Her initial focus was the colonial Andes, specifically the Viceroyalty of Peru, during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. While she remains active in research in this area, primarily by studying colonial public festivities, the interdisciplinary breadth of her work has taken her to the Spanish Caribbean and British America in the eighteenth century. She conducts archival and historical newspaper research on the Spanish Negroes. The latter was the name that black, biracial, and native sailors from the Spanish colonies received in New York. English privateers captured them in the Caribbean, onboard Spanish privateers, warships, and other vessels, brought them to the city, and sold them into slavery. Peña’s goal is that these forgotten men, primarily lost in the multitude of enslaved Africans, are relocated in the history of people of African ancestry in colonial America and Latin America.

Publications

Books

Winner of the Best Academic Themed Book, College Level, The 26th International Latino Book Awards, Gold medal (2024)

Honorable Mention, Best History Book, The 26th International Latino Book Awards (2024)

Winner of the 2023 Willi Paul Adams Award (Organization of American Historians)

Winner of the Best Academic Themed Book, College Level, The 24th International Latino Book Awards, Gold medal (2022)

Winner of the The Victor Villaseñor Best Latino Focused Nonfiction Book Award – Spanish or Bilingual, The 24th International Latino Book Awards, Silver medal (2022)

Winner of the Best Biography – Spanish or Bilingual, The 24th International Latino Book Awards, Silver medal (2022)

Winner of the Premio “Juan Antonio Cebrián” de Divulgación Histórica 2014.

Winner of the Premio de Historia Colonial de América “Silvio Zavala” 2013

Winner of the Premio Alfredo A.
