Can variationist researchers extract relevant social categories from linguistic data instead of or in addition to testing hypotheses with categories as constructed by researchers? This idea was inspired by two articles with Bill Haddican as lead author (Haddican, et al. 2021<\/a>, 2022<\/a>), which noted interesting demographic patterns among various changes in progress.
