Graduate Media Studies at Queens College convenes regular colloquia to engage colleagues and outside practitioners in conversations about their work, research and scholarship.
Unless noted, all colloquia take place on Wednesdays from 5:30-6:20pm in G Building, Room 200 and are open to the entire CUNY community.

Brian Hughes: A Lone Wolf in the Hypertext: Radicalization Online (February 26)
In the last two decades, the world has witnessed a sharp increase in attacks by lone offender terrorists (“lone wolves”). Today, these attackers are more likely to radicalize online, in a variety of digital spaces, and to draw inspiration from a variety of inconsistent and even contradictory political philosophies. Brian Hughes’s work examines how communication technologies, media formats, and communication practices help to shape the eclectic ideological positions and identity claims of this growing threat.
CANCELLED: Jennifer Rauch: Re-Imagining Luddism: Heroes and Villains, Cranks and Converts (March 18)
Jennifer Rauch’s work examines evolving public perceptions of Luddites over two centuries: as local heroes, public menaces, noble revolutionaries, and early archetypes of environmental and anti-globalization activists. Her talk will explore possibilities for reclaiming the rhetoric of Luddism to embolden conversations about the socio-cultural effects of digital media.
CANCELLED: Sophie Ellman-Golan: NEVER AGAIN (April 29)
Sophie Ellman-Golan is the Director of a two-year offensive campaign against antisemitism and white nationalism in the Republican Party. She is the former Director of Communications and Digital Outreach at Women’s March and the co-creator of the Confront White Womanhood workshop. Sophie is a member leader of the Campaign for Police Accountability and Anti-Jewish Oppression Working Group, and a Strategic Messaging Consultant at Jews for Racial & Economic Justice (JFREJ). As one of the National Organizers of the Women’s March on Washington, Sophie was named one of Glamour Magazine’s 2017 Women of the Year.
