The Media Studies<\/strong> department at Queens College boasts world-renowned professors who are experts film and television studies, advertising and marketing, international communications, digital media, and the media arts. Media Studies majors get to create individualized programs in consultation with faculty mentors. New York City plays a major role in QC\u2019s Media Studies program and students who attend events in the five boroughs may earn credits by interning at major corporate and public institutions in the greater New York area.<\/p>\n

The Media Studies Department recognizes that today\u2019s media range from traditional print vehicles to digital publications, from professional film and TV to do-it-yourself videos broadcast through social networks. Media Studies covers all of these platforms and educates students in necessary critical skills for anyone entering any profession where information shared and exchanged. QC Media Studies has an undergraduate program that explores media institutions, forms, contents, creative processes, and social effects and a Masters Program that enhances these skills and incorporates advanced learning, activism, and social justice endeavors.<\/p>\n

In Summer 2025, Prof Jamie Cohen was joined by senior Media Studies student Gwyneth Agbenyo and Dean Simone Yearwood at the 19th Salzburg Academy on Media and Global Change<\/a> in Salzburg Austria. Dr. Cohen gave his talk “Creative Misuse and Combating the Algorithms” and Gwyneth helped produce the “Laal Stadt” section of the Proximity, People, And Power playbook<\/a> which was part of the Imagining Local Media Futures, Building Democratic Media theme. Queens College Media Studies is now a partner of the Salzburg Academy.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Social Justice + Media Symposium is at Queens College this year. Our theme is Movement:\u00a0<\/p>\n

Movement is constant. It signifies change. It signifies development. It signifies being. From crowds in an organized march to bodies in performance, movement is embedded in how we engage with the world. We move through spaces, ideas, and identities as we navigate our proximal surroundings. In these physical spaces, we feel movement, and movement feels us.<\/p>\n

The 2024 Social Justice + Media Symposium, taking place at Queens College explores the concept of movement, from people to platforms, and how movement can support more just and equitable futures. Queens is the most diverse county in the US, a region that celebrates movement: two international airports, a sprawling metro system, an immigrant diaspora with over 800 languages, art centers and theaters, and social movements and passionate activism.\u00a0The Symposium will examine diversity, visibility, agency, performance, art, civics, and safety in the microcosm of Queens that represents the ever-changing world.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Our Keynote is Douglas Rushkoff and there will be several workshops for undergrads and the community to attend.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\"MadeleineProfessor Madeleine Hunt-Ehrlich is one of the 11 winners of the prestigious Herb Alpert Award<\/a>. The Herb Alpert Award awards its recipients with<\/a> “annual prizes which recognize and fund risk-taking mid-career artists in the fields of dance, music, film\/video, theater and visual arts.”<\/p>\n

“Filmmaker and artist<\/a>\u00a0Madeleine Hunt-Ehrlich<\/strong> makes films that poetically and rigorously revitalize inherited cinematic language and illuminate oft-neglected Black women\u2019s lives past and present. Rooted in narrative and documentary traditions, in an aesthetic and political sensibility and elegant use of sound, she is using different logics \u2013 like dream and fragment – as important structures for telling stories.”<\/p>\n

In collaboration with the Drama, Theatre and Dance<\/a> department, we are offering a new MA track for media artists, actors, dancers, writers, directors, documentarians, gamers, technicians, designers, and performance studies scholars interested in performance and media as a form of social practice, activism, or community building.\u00a0\u00a0It is particularly appropriate for those pursuing careers in the performing arts, arts education, media arts, arts activism, hacktivism, or community arts and media.<\/p>\n

\"PhotoMedia Studies is a multidisciplinary department that examines the various delivery systems for informational and cultural resources\u2014print, film, television, advertising, video games, the internet, mobile phones\u2014and their global social, cultural, economic, and political impact. Media Studies also looks at the range of institutions involved in shaping and transmitting representational material.<\/p>\n

The undergraduate program<\/a> encompasses the aesthetic and historical study of old and new media, as well as courses in advertising and marketing. After completing core requirements, Media Studies majors are encouraged to concentrate in areas that interest them.<\/p>\n
