Academic<\/h3>\n

Professor Sardell is Professor Emeritus of Urban Studies. She studies the politics of community-based health care and health care access. Her book, The U.S. Experiment in Social Medicine: The Community Health Center Program, 1965-1986, <\/em>is the definitive policy history of one of this country\u2019s major innovations in health care delivery. In her second book,\u00a0<\/span>Insuring Children\u2019s Health: Contentious Politics and Public Policy,\u00a0<\/span><\/i>Professor Sardell details the dramatic history of the State Children\u2019s Health Insurance Program, including the dogged work of policy entrepreneurs to ultimately pass the federal legislation that facilitates low-cost health coverage for American children. The research for this book was funded in part by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Investigator Award in Health Policy Research, a highly competitive grant awarded annually to approximately 10-15 health policy scholars in the U.S.<\/p>\n

She has also consulted for organizations advocating for school-based health centers by evaluating their organizational capacity and policy activities at both the state and national level. Professor Sardell has published articles on the politics of Medicaid, SCHIP, and the welfare rights movement.<\/p>\n

Sardell established the department\u2019s Cities and Social Medicine Minor.<\/p>\n
