Students will gain insight on how<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0writing is part of the process of understanding and making knowledge within specific fields of study and the larger worlds these fields seek to understand. To that end,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">writing classes at Queens College are designed to provide students opportunities to compose across a variety of writing situations\u00a0nad\u00a0using a range of technologies to reach audiences within academic contexts and beyond. In our writing classes, students use their linguistic and digital resources to practice a range of writing strategies (e.g. brainstorming, revision, collaboration), genre analysis (determining genre expectations and conventions for academic, professional and public contexts),and ethical research approaches. Writing courses contribute to students\u2019 development as academic, workplace, and civic writers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Queens College students take four writing classes:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"2\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><strong>College Writing 1 (CW1):<\/strong> English 110 (Introduction to College Writing)<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"2\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><strong>College Writing 2 (CW2):<\/strong> CW2 classes can be taken either in or out of the a student&#8217;s major. Students should consult their major departments to find out if there is a recommended course.<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-aria-posinset=\"3\" data-aria-level=\"2\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><strong>Two Writing Intensive (W) classes:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Writing intensive classes are either general education classes with a W designation or a major class with a W designation. In short, this class offers the foundation for future success in any student\u2019s major field of study. It is a required class that all first-year students ideally take within their first year of college within the English department. This interdisciplinary class\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">fosters confidence and helps students to develop an approach to pursuing\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">academic and public writing projects, effectively managing time, and taking ownership of their writing and editing processes. This course counts towards three of the six credits in English Composition (EC1) for Pathways.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>College Writing 2<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">College Writing 2 (CW2) is a class that students typically take in their second semester of college. It builds on the outcomes of College Writing 1 (CW1). However, unlike with CW1, a student may take CW2 outside of the English department, ideally within the same discipline as their major, to build the rhetorical skills they will need most.
