Through 09\/18\/26, the Queens College Writing Center is accepting applications for graduate writing tutors. Only current QC graduate students (Bachelor’s degree in hand) are eligible. We invite applicants across all disciplines and especially encourage multilingual applicants.<\/p>\n
\u00a0This is an on-campus position with 8-10 hrs\/wk expected, at a wage of $21.00\/hr. The intended start date is in late Fall of 2026 with the opportunity for Spring 2027 reappointment.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n \u00a0In addition to peer writing support, writing tutors are expected to actively engage in the development of their tutoring pedagogies by reading and responding to current scholarship as well as participating in staff development. Graduate student staff may have additional responsibilities including the mentorship of new tutors.<\/span><\/p>\n To apply, <\/u><\/strong>please send qc.writing.center@qc.cuny.edu an email (subject line: “Application: Grad Tutor”) with the following:<\/span><\/p>\n If you are an eligible graduate student who has submitted application materials within the last year, someone from QCWC should reach out to you within the next few weeks.<\/em><\/p>\n Potential applicants should know:<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_accordion_item][et_pb_accordion_item title=”How many appointments can I make at the Writing Center?” _builder_version=”4.27.0″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}” open=”off”]<\/p>\n Students are allowed to book 2 appointments per week and no more than 1 per day, pending availability.\u00a0<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_accordion_item][et_pb_accordion_item title=”Can someone at the Writing Center edit my papers?” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}” open=”off”]<\/p>\n Tutors at the Writing Center work with you on understanding and identifying errors, helping you correct them on your own.\u00a0<\/p>\n In other words: do we edit papers? No. But can we help you better strategize when it comes to editing? Yes. (And we do it all the time!)<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_accordion_item][et_pb_accordion_item title=”Does the Writing Center take walk-ins?” _builder_version=”4.21.0″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}” open=”off”]<\/p>\n You’re welcome to walk in to the Writing Center to see if someone is available, but you still must make a booking on WCOnline<\/strong>. For this reason, we suggest booking in advance. <\/p>\n Note: while assistance with booking walk-ins is typically available during regular business hours, it depends on the availability of front desk staff.<\/p>\n [\/et_pb_accordion_item][et_pb_accordion_item title=”I’m a graduate student. Can I make an appointment?” _builder_version=”4.27.4″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}” open=”off”]<\/p>\n Absolutely! The Writing Center’s services extend to all students. There are even some graduate-level consultants on staff, should you wish to work with another graduate student.<\/p>\n It’s important to keep in mind the scope of what your tutor and your session can offer you, however. If you’re working on a lengthy thesis or dissertation, for example, your tutor cannot read it in full and offer meaningful feedback on the entire document in only fifty minutes. Here are some tips on maximizing your experience as a grad student working with the Writing Center:<\/p>\n Factor us in early<\/strong>. There’s no need to wait for feedback; consider employing the Writing Center as you’re formulating your project and researching to keep you on course.<\/p>\n Factor us in often. <\/strong>Multiple visits allow for meaningful attention to smaller sections and\/or individual aspects of your writing. <\/strong>Graduate students are permitted 2 sessions per week.<\/p>\n Remember that the Writing Center comprises only one piece of the “writing support” pie. <\/strong>It’s not uncommon for graduate students to involve many people in their writing process, from faculty advisors to librarians to for-hire editors.
