She also taught at the College, where she met her husband, Dr. Forbes I. Hill. A beloved professor in the Media Studies Department, Forbes taught at Queens College for over 40 years. He even returned to teaching (as a part-time adjunct professor) after his retirement in 2003. \u201c<em>His greatest love was teaching,<\/em>\u201d Lyn observes. In June, 2008, in honor of Forbes\u2019 80th birthday and illustrious academic career, his wife and their children Harry, Stephanie, and Tim decided to establish an endowed scholarship fund in his name. \u201c<em>We wanted to use the occasion to do something really significant,<\/em>\u201d explains Lyn. The original goal was to raise $10,000 for the project. But support from friends, colleagues, former students, and extended family was considerable, raising the gift to $80,000 in June 2008 and over $100,000 today. The endowment provides tuition awards to juniors and seniors based on merit and need.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span>Why I Give<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span>Lyn encourages her fellow alumni to establish scholarship funds that make a difference in the lives of dedicated, hard-working students with financial needs. \u201c<em>It is our family\u2019s hope that the family and friends of other QC faculty members and alumni will replicate this model in honor of a loved one,<\/em>\u201d Lyn notes. \u201c<em>Many people will find that if they ask friends and family members to honor or memorialize a loved one with a gift to the College, they can be responsible for raising a surprising amount of money.<\/em>\u201d Forbes Hill passed away in November 2008, but his legacy lives on through his scholarship, and the students who will benefit from it for generations to come.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_slide][\/et_pb_slider][et_pb_slider use_bg_overlay=&#8221;on&#8221; use_text_overlay=&#8221;on&#8221; text_border_radius=&#8221;19px&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; background_color=&#8221;#E71939&#8243; background_enable_image=&#8221;off&#8221; background_size=&#8221;contain&#8221; custom_padding=&#8221;15px||||false|false&#8221; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; border_width_all_image=&#8221;5px&#8221; border_color_all_image=&#8221;#E71939&#8243; border_style_all_image=&#8221;ridge&#8221; locked=&#8221;off&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;][et_pb_slide heading=&#8221;RICHARD GOLDSTEIN \u201973&#8243; image=&#8221;https:\/\/www.qc.cuny.edu\/qcf\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/31\/2024\/07\/Richard-Goldstein_200.jpg&#8221; use_bg_overlay=&#8221;on&#8221; use_text_overlay=&#8221;on&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.0&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; locked=&#8221;off&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; sticky_transition=&#8221;on&#8221; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px;text-align: left\">At the 1973 Queens College Commencement,\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 14px;text-align: left\">Richard Goldstein<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 14px;text-align: left\">\u00a0represented the senior class and graduated Summa Cum Laude with a degree in Economics. \u201cQC gave me an unbelievable, totally affordable world-class education for which I will always be indebted,\u201d says Richard, who went on to graduate from Harvard Law School. \u201c<em>Without QC I would never have been able to graduate from a four-year college and then professional school.<\/em>\u201d Today, Richard is the Chairman and CEO of AEP Capital LLC, a private equity firm which he co-founded.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span>Richard recalls his college years fondly. \u201c<em>Queens College embodies opportunity, excellence and dreams, providing a setting for its students (and faculty) to make their dreams come true,<\/em>\u201d he comments. \u201c<em>I had great teachers and mentors\u2014Professors Ron Filante and Isaac Alteras come to mind. They were fantastic teachers and role models.<\/em>\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span>Richard has been one of Queens College\u2019s most supportive and active alumni. He was honored at the Queens College Gala in 2002, and has given generously to the event, QC\u2019s biggest annual fundraiser, ever since. \u201c<em>Supporting QC is a natural,<\/em>\u201d he says without hesitation. \u201c<em>It is a classic case of giving back.<\/em>\u201d After serving on the Queens College Foundation Board of Trustees from 1991-2010, and in recognition of his many years of service, Richard remains an honorary member and Chairman Emeritus.<\/span><em><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span>Why I Give<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span>\u201c<em>When I was Chair of the QC Foundation, I remember vividly awarding a modest scholarship to a graduate student who thanked me profusely and said with this stipend she would attend graduate school full-time and would no longer have to work as a bagger at Waldbaums. I was recently in touch with some of my students from the 60s, and I was touched by their kind words for me as a teacher.<\/em>\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span>Why I Give<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\"><span>In 2011, Mr. Orphanos started a scholarship which offers students tuition assistance. 14 students have been awarded this scholarship to date. \u201c<em>I have such a feeling of gratitude for this school,<\/em>\u201d he says. \u201c<em>To think that I received this amazing education for no cost \u2013 I think there was a $10 fee and then I had to buy books. Today, mathematics still plays a vital role in their lives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Russ serves as Vice Chairman of Computer Associates (CA), one of the world\u2019s largest software companies, which he co-founded in 1976 with Queens College classmate Charles Wang \u201967. With more than 30 years of IT industry experience as a technology leader, consultant, and executive, Russ is a recognized expert in software development and project management. He is also a member of the Queens College Foundation Board.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">After teaching secondary school mathematics in the early part of her career, Alice went on to receive a PhD in mathematics education. Since 1983, she has been teaching Queens College courses that bridge mathematics and education. In addition, she is the co-founder and project director of TIME 2000 (Teaching Improvements Through Mathematics Education), an innovative four-year undergraduate mathematics teacher preparation program.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Alice is a recipient of the Queens College Presidential Award for Excellence in Teaching; both Alice and Russ received the President\u2019s Medal for service to the College and community in May 2008.<em><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span>Why We Give<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201c<em>I have a strong allegiance to Queens College,<\/em>\u201d says Russ, reflecting on his roots at QC. \u201c<em>Meeting Alice and my business partner there set the foundation for my business and personal life.<\/em>\u201d Both Alice and Russ deeply respect the hardworking nature of the students and recognize that a majority of them receive tuition assistance and still work to support themselves. Alice comments, \u201c<em>I walk on campus and I feel honored to work with these students. I am in awe of them.<\/em>\u201d\u00a0 Russ adds, \u201c<em>Queens welcomes students of all cultures from countries all around the world. Most of the students are of humble roots, as Alice and I are. We can relate to them from our background.<\/em>\u201d\u00a0 Alice agrees. \u201c<em>Queens is a place where you can fulfill your dreams no matter who you are and where you come from,<\/em>\u201d she concludes. \u201c<em>You feel part of the whole world.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">Alice and Russ believe so strongly in the mission of Queens College:<em><span>\u00a0<\/span>We learn so that we may serve.<\/em><span>\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<em>It is so in keeping with everything I do and my students are going to do \u2013 learn to give back,<\/em>\u201d Alice explains. \u201c<em>Help others. That\u2019s what QC did for me. He has been with the bank and its subsidiaries ever since. Rising through the ranks, Robert became Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer before being promoted to Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of New York Community Bancorp. He still holds this position and also serves on the company\u2019s Board of Directors.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify\">\u201c<em>If I had to describe my time at Queens College, I would say I was given a superior educational experience,<\/em>\u201d comments Robert. Having built such a successful career in the banking industry, he worked with his wife Shirley to create the Wann Family Foundation in 2002, which provides funding to religious, educational, medical, and humanitarian organizations. In addition, the Foundation also supports the Godwin-Ternbach Museum at Queens College. Robert and Shirley also established the Wann Family Foundation Scholarship Endowment, which provides scholarships for Accounting majors with superior academic standing.
