Rubric for Evaluating Online Instruction<\/h1>\n

If you are looking to evaluate your own hybrid or online course, or if you are asked to observe a hybrid or online course being taught by a colleague, you may want to use a rubric for online instruction.<\/p>\n

One rubric we\u00a0<\/span>recommend was developed by <\/span>the<\/span>\u00a0State University of New York, through SUNY Online<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0It specifies six categories for a course with online components:<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. Course Overview and Information:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Does the course include a welcome message and a syllabus? Is the syllabus easy to find? Does the syllabus clearly\u00a0<\/span>state<\/span>\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span>course<\/span> expectations? Does the course provide links to college policies on Academic Integrity, special accommodations, etc.?<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Course Technology & Tools:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Does the course clearly\u00a0<\/span>state<\/span>\u00a0the skills\u00a0<\/span>required<\/span>\u00a0for using technology; list support resources for using technology listed; include links to privacy policies for technology? Do the required technology tools meet accessibility standards?<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Design and Layout:<\/span><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Is the course layout logical and consistent? Is it easy to navigate? Does the design meet accessibility standards?<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. Content and Activities:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Does the course offer a variety of ways for the learner to engage with the content,\u00a0<\/span>classmates<\/span>\u00a0and the instructor? Does the course provide activities that involve problem solving skills, experiential learning, case studies, and problem-based\u00a0<\/span>activities<\/span>?\u00a0<\/span>Do the\u00a0<\/span>course<\/span>\u00a0materials and resources include copyright and licensing status? Does the course meet accessibility standards?<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. Interaction:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Does the course provide regularly scheduled instructor-to-student interactions and\u00a0<\/span>feedback?<\/span>\u00a0Are expectations for course interactions clearly\u00a0<\/span>stated<\/span>? Does the course provide opportunities to build class community (learner to learner interaction, collaboration, resource sharing)?<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  6. Assessment and Feedback:<\/span><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Are grading policies, including consequences of late submissions clearly\u00a0<\/span>stated<\/span>\u00a0in the Course Information\/ Syllabus materials? Does the course include frequent,\u00a0<\/span>appropriate<\/span>, and authentic methods to assess the learners\u2019 mastery of content? Is the Criteria for the assessment of a graded assignment clearly\u00a0<\/span>stated<\/span>? Does the course provide opportunities for learners to review and assess their own learning? Are learners informed when a timed response is <\/span>required<\/span>? Is the gradebook up-to-date and is it easy for learners to access? Does the course include the opportunity for learners to provide feedback on the course?<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
