Faculty Development Needs Assessment: Findings and Recommendations<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h1>\n

In Fall 2025, CETLL conducted a needs assessment\u2014combining a college-wide faculty survey (303 responses) and thirty 1:1\u00a0<\/span><\/span>interviews<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>with deans, chairs, and faculty\u2014to understand what QC faculty need to teach effectively and to guide CETLL\u2019s short- and long-term planning. This\u00a0<\/span><\/span>summary<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>highlights the findings and recommendations that\u00a0<\/span><\/span>emerged<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>through this process.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Three broad findings emerged:<\/strong><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Teaching has become more complex, as faculty balance foundational skill-building, rapidly changing technology, evolving assessment practices, and growing attention to student engagement and career preparation.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  2. \u00a0<\/span>Faculty consistently want more opportunities to learn with and from one another, through\u00a0<\/span><\/span>peer mentoring, interdisciplinary collaboration, and sustained communities of practice.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Meaningful change requires institutional investment: faculty need protected time,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>recognition, and structural support\u2014not just more programming\u2014to sustain teaching\u00a0<\/span><\/span>innovation<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and scholarship.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Within <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>these broad findings, generative AI, supporting student skills development, and\u00a0experiential\/active learning stood out as the most urgent priorities, alongside strong interest\u00a0in assessment practices, intentional course design, instructional technology, and support for\u00a0scholarship\u2014especially mentorship for new, pre-tenure, and adjunct faculty.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    Based on these findings, this report recommends that QC and CETLL:<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n

    <\/span><\/p>\n

      \n
    • Incorporate these findings into QC\u2019s next strategic plan<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
    • Implement strategies that expand faculty time, recognition, and support to ease workload<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>barriers to teaching innovation and scholarship, especially for new, pre-tenure\/CCE, and<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>adjunct faculty<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
    • Develop focused programming on top priority areas– especially generative AI, student skills<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>development, and experiential\/active learning– with both institution-wide guidance and<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>discipline specific support<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
    • Continue and expand peer-based learning and interdisciplinary collaboration<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
    • Improve outreach so more faculty are aware of and can access existing CETLL offerings<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
