Queens College Remembers Scientist and Environmental Pioneer Barry Commoner

Statement from Queens College President James L. Muyskens:
Barry Commoner, considered by many to be the father of the environmental movement, died this past Sunday at the age of 95. His ties with Queens College go back a long way, to the early 1940s when he taught biology here, and then he was a presence on our campus for over 20 years when he moved his Center for the Biology of Natural Systems here in 1981. For decades he took on most of the major issues facing the environment—including radioactive fallout, nuclear power, lead poisoning, and the global dispersion of pollutants—and offered brilliant analyses and workable solutions to these problems. He was also a fine writer who wrote the classic Making Peace with the Planet, and a great believer in democracy and of the power of people to work together to make the world a more just and greener place. Barry Commoner will be missed, but he has left behind an example that will continue to inspire.
