Queens College Students Are Raising Funds to Name a Poetry Prize for Graduate Hoyt Jacobs, Killed in Bicycle Accident

-- Jacobs, a Poet and Teacher, Had Earned an MFA in 2011 from the Creative Writing and Literary Translation Program at QC --

FLUSHING, NY, January 22, 2015 – Hoyt Jacobs, 36, hit and killed by a truck while he was bicycling in Long Island City on Saturday, January 17, was a talented poet, a teacher and an inspiration to many.

A 2011 recipient of an MFA in Poetry from Queens College, Hoyt had taught Creative Writing and Composition there as an adjunct and went on to receive certification in teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) at QC.
A native of Georgia, he was living in Brooklyn at the time of his death and working as a reading and writing tutor at New York City College of Technology, CUNY.

“Hoyt's death has sent shock waves through our MFA community, and our students, alumnae and faculty are broken-hearted,” says Professor Nicole Cooley, director of the college’s MFA Program in Creative Writing and Literary Translation. “In the wake of this senseless accident, Hoyt's friends and fellow MFA alumni have done a wonderful thing by launching a fundraising campaign for the new Hoyt Jacobs Poetry Prize. This will be given every May to a Queens College MFA poetry student since the MFA program brought Hoyt to us and brought all of us together.”

In just a few days, the campaign, on the GoFundMe site, has attracted many supporters. For more information, please visit:

A memorial for Hoyt will be sponsored at a later date by the literary collective Oh, Bernice! founded by Queens College MFA students, to which he belonged.
