Every other Sunday, Sheryl McCarthy pores over a PDF of the Knight News<\/em> before it goes to press. Just as she\u2019s done as a columnist for major dailies, she will offer candid, constructive comments. Once a college journalist herself, she enjoys critiquing the writers and editors of QC\u2019s award-winning student newspaper. They\u2019re \u201cvery dedicated, they work very hard, and they\u2019re fun to be around,\u201d she says.<\/p>\nAn op-ed contributor to USA Today<\/em>, McCarthy trained her journalistic voice as a New York Newsday<\/em> columnist who took thought-provoking stands on social and political issues. After that paper folded in 1995, she became nationally syndicated through its parent company until it, too, was \u201ceviscerated\u201d in 2005, she notes.<\/p>\nNow in her third year of teaching journalism and mentoring students at Queens College, McCarthy also hosts \u201cOne to One\u201d on CUNY cable TV. In talking with students about critical issues in journalism, she can draw upon her extensive experience as a reporter in Boston, Baltimore, and New York; education editor for the New York Daily News<\/em>; national correspondent for ABC-TV News; and talk show host on WNET-TV and WNYC-TV. Among her honors was a Nieman Fellowship from Harvard.<\/p>\nComing of age in Birmingham\u2019s civil rights battleground, McCarthy aspired to move people in the way that To Kill a Mockingbird<\/em> had, she recalls. After graduating from Mt. Holyoke College, she couldn\u2019t earn a living writing fiction. However, \u201cby being a journalist, you were also being a storyteller,\u201d she discovered. \u201cI just wanted to tell the truth about things that interested me. I still do. There are a lot of truths to be told.\u201d<\/p>\nTwo of her favorite books about \u201cthe arc of life\u201d<\/strong>: The Waves<\/em> by Virginia Woolf and Are You Somebody?<\/em> by Nuala O\u2019Faolain.<\/p>\nSurprising fact<\/strong>: A \u201cvery good\u201d pianist growing up, as an adult she has sung in well-known choral groups, given two voice recitals, and been a paid church choir singer. \u201cMusic has played a real big part in my life,\u201d she affirms. \u201cI\u2019ve gotten a lot of joy out of singing.\u201d<\/p>\n[\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][\/et_pb_section]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
