A physical anthropologist, bioarchaeologist, scholar of human epidemiology, and specialist on ancient China, she will advocate for diverse social sciences \u2013<\/span><\/i><\/b><\/h3>\n<p class=\"xxmsonormal\"><span>Flushing,\u00a0New York, March 24, 2022\u2014<\/span><span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.qc.cuny.edu\/about\/administration\/president\/Pages\/Welcome.aspx\">President Frank H. Wu<\/a><\/span><span>\u00a0has\u00a0announced the appointment of Kate Pechenkina as dean of the School of Social Sciences.\u00a0Pechenkina\u00a0has been serving in this position on an interim basis since July 2020.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWe are delighted to name Kate Pechenkina as our new dean of social sciences,\u201d says Wu. \u201cWith her international outlook, excellence in teaching and scholarship, and interdisciplinary knowledge and research skills, she is the ideal person to represent and bridge the many disciplines included in the School of Social Sciences. She brings very current, socially and scientifically engaged awareness to bear on our 21st-century mission, in accordance with our\u00a0<\/span><span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.qc.cuny.edu\/strategic-planning\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Strategic Plan<\/a><\/span><span>.\u201d<\/span><span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>A principal emphasis in\u00a0Pechenkina&#8217;s\u00a0research is on how past environmental and cultural changes have shaped human epidemiology. Her research interests include stable isotope reconstruction of past human and animal diets, gender inequality in health, and bone and dental pathology. Since 2004, she has been conducting fieldwork in\u00a0Henan Province, China, where she excavates at the ancient city of Zhenghan, which served as a capital of Zheng and Han kingdoms during early dynasties.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;I am truly grateful to President Wu for offering me this appointment,&#8221; says Pechenkina. &#8220;I am inspired by the opportunity to contribute to the growth of an institution that has been my academic home for almost two decades.&#8221;<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Pechenkina\u00a0co-edited\u00a0a\u00a0research\u00a0anthology,\u00a0<i>Bioarchaeology of East Asia: Movement, Contact, Health,<\/i> and has published over two dozen research articles and book chapters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><\/span><span>As interim dean, Pechenkina was instrumental in developing the new<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><span><a href=\"https:\/\/nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https:\/\/www.qc.cuny.edu\/communications\/news_services\/releases\/Pages\/welcome.aspx?ItemID%3D2101&amp;data=04%7c01%7cMaria.Matteo%40qc.cuny.edu%7c269d739ff8f24f09762508da06035c57%7c6f60f0b35f064e099715989dba8cc7d8%7c0%7c0%7c637828908738037193%7cUnknown%7cTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7c3000&amp;sdata=Q0E3\/24uPUguez%2BKGONUdQQePRoiPawmhDhvJyOUyfk%3D&amp;reserved=0\">Queens College Business School<\/a><\/span><span>,\u00a0which was launched on Thursday, March 3. She has been coordinating the 4+1 program in public health with the CUNY Graduate School of Public Heath, supervising the redesign of the pre-law advisory program, and overseeing the faculty diversity enhancement program sponsored by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><\/span><span>Pechenkina earned a BS in biology and an MS in biology\/anthropology from Moscow State University in Russia.
