Luigi Dallapiccola (1904-1975)<\/strong><\/p><\/div><\/p>\n

Luigi Dallapiccola (1904-1975)<\/strong> was an Italian composer known for his lyrical twelve-tone compositions. He was born to Italian parents in <\/span>Pisino<\/span> d\u2019Istria<\/span>, at the time part of Austria-Hungary (currently Pazin, Croatia). He obtained his piano degree at the Florence Conservatory in the 1920\u2019s and became professor there, teaching lessons in piano as a secondary instrument until his 1967 retirement. Beginning in 1956 he also taught several semesters of composition at Queens College. During World War II he had twice been forced into hiding, continuing his touring as a recitalist only in countries not occupied by the Nazis. Dallapiccola was the first Italian composer to embrace the serial techniques of the Second Viennese School, which he had <\/span>encountered<\/span> in the 1930\u2019s. His most famous work is the one-act opera <\/span><\/span>Il <\/span>prigioniero<\/span><\/span> (1944-48), which tells the story of a political prisoner whose jailer allows him to escape from his cell, only to find out it has all been a cruel joke. The opera\u2019s outlook reflects Dallapiccola\u2019s disillusionment with fascism, which he had supported when Mussolini first came into power. Much of Dallapiccola\u2019s work <\/span>comprises<\/span> songs for solo voice and instrumental accompaniment. His touch with instrumentation is noted for its impressionistic sensuality and soft textures, heavy on sustained notes by woodwinds and strings<\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
