A longtime resident of Forest Hills, Queens, Palmieri remained deeply rooted in New York City’s music scene throughout his life.

Palmieri began his career in the 1950s, performing with bands led by Eddie Forrester, Johnny Segui, and Tito Rodriguez. He was known for fusing Afro-Caribbean rhythms with the complexity of jazz, drawing inspiration from Thelonious Monk, Herbie Hancock, McCoy Tyner, and his brother, Charlie Palmieri. In 1961, Palmieri formed the band La Perfecta, breaking tradition by employing a trombone-heavy sound that redefined Latin music. He won 10 Grammy Awards, including the first ever for Best Latin Recording in 1975 for The Sun of Latin Music, and two in 2000 for Obra Maestra/Masterpiece, his collaboration with Tito Puente.

Honored as a cultural icon, Palmieri was recorded by the Smithsonian in 1988 and named an NEA Jazz Master in 2013—the highest award in American jazz. His legacy endures through the innovative sounds he brought to generations of listeners. In November 2021, the Kupferberg Center for the Arts at Queens College welcomed Palmieri to the Colden Auditorium for its first major concert after the pandemic shutdown.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row custom_padding_last_edited=”off|desktop”
