Fascinating, important research is happening here at&nbsp;QC&nbsp;and&nbsp;we want you to know about it!&nbsp;Sometimes&nbsp;(but not always)&nbsp;this series&nbsp;may feature several&nbsp;works on related topics; other times&nbsp;it will simply feature a few works of interest.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"local-knowledge-universal-applicability\">Local Knowledge, Universal (?) Applicability<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Welcome to the November edition of QC Research Highlights!<\/strong>&nbsp;This month, I wanted to feature some articles that consider how things learned locally might be of interest both inside and outside that local context&nbsp;\u2013 and especially when we are learning about&nbsp;<em>our<\/em>&nbsp;local context, New York.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In \u201c<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/academicworks.cuny.edu\/cgi\/viewcontent.cgi?article=1473&amp;context=qc_pubs\" target=\"_blank\">Education Faculty as Knowledge Brokers: Competing for Access to New York State Print Media and Policy Influence<\/a>,\u201d <strong>Nakia Gray-Nicolas<\/strong> (Education and Community Programs)&nbsp;and co-authors&nbsp;consider how education researchers can reach a larger public, thus influencing public debates about educational policy and practice.&nbsp;This article focuses specifically on the media in New York State.&nbsp;This article considers the reasons it\u2019s so&nbsp;difficult for academics to get access to the media.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Communicating in different contexts is important to students as well as faculty.&nbsp;\u201c<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/academicworks.cuny.edu\/cgi\/viewcontent.cgi?article=1512&amp;context=qc_pubs\" target=\"_blank\">Workin&#8217; Languages: Who We Are Matters in Our Writing<\/a>\u201d is a book chapter by&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/english.qc.cuny.edu\/quick-links\/sara-p-alvarez\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Sara Alvarez<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;(English),&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/english.qc.cuny.edu\/quick-links\/amy-wan\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Amy Wan<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;(English), and&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.uh.edu\/class\/english\/people\/faculty\/lee-e\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Eunjeong&nbsp;Lee<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;(formerly a member of the English department, now at the University of Houston).&nbsp; In this chapter, Alvarez, Wan, and Lee consider how to ensure that students\u2019 rich linguistic diversity is valued in the writing classroom. The authors suggest strategies for supporting students as they recognize their own work as \u201clanguage architects\u201d and come to understand that their language strategies are valuable in an academic context.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We should all be interested in how the built environment of New York affects those who live and work here.<strong>&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.queenscollegehistory.org\/people-2\/2018\/5\/14\/kara-schlichting\" target=\"_blank\">Kara Schlichting<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;(History) and coauthor Melanie&nbsp;Kiechle&nbsp;(Virginia Tech)&nbsp;consider how heat and ventilation can post health threats to city dwellers (and New Yorkers specifically) \u2013 during COVID, but also long before.&nbsp; Their article, \u201c<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/academicworks.cuny.edu\/cgi\/viewcontent.cgi?article=1472&amp;context=qc_pubs\" target=\"_blank\">Invisible Inequalities: Persistent Health Threats in the Urban Built Environment<\/a>,\u201d considers the history of health reform in New York City through the lens of environmental inequality, with a reminder to think of cities as collections of&nbsp;<em>people<\/em>&nbsp;and not just landscapes. This perspective allows for a larger-scale structural look at how urban planning and public health are&nbsp;deeply intertwined.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, New York is not just a built environment but also a natural one.&nbsp;<strong>C\u00e9sar Castillo<\/strong> (Biology) worked with coauthors from the New York Botanical Garden and the US Department of Agriculture to describe a plant naturalized to New York in \u201c<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/academicworks.cuny.edu\/cgi\/viewcontent.cgi?article=1511&amp;context=qc_pubs\" target=\"_blank\">First Report of&nbsp;Mummenhoffia&nbsp;alliacea&nbsp;(Brassicaceae) for New York<\/a>.\u201d This report includes information on how to identify this plant \u2013 one key is the scent!&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A little further afield,&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/physics.qc.cuny.edu\/people\/emeritus\/fcadieu\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Fred&nbsp;Cadieu<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;(Physics) examines rocky planets in his article \u201c<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/academicworks.cuny.edu\/cgi\/viewcontent.cgi?article=1495&amp;context=qc_pubs\" target=\"_blank\">A Consistent Model of Terrestrial Planet Magnetospheres and Rotations in Our Solar System<\/a>.\u201d In this article, he explains how the presence or absence of magnetospheres has affected the atmospheres and tectonic behavior of the four terrestrial planets of the solar system \u2013 Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars \u2013 and perhaps exoplanets as well.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Having taken us from New York all the way into the depths of space, I wish you all a happy and productive November!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Thanks to all the authors featured here for sharing their work in the repository!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\"><em>If you would like to share your research in Academic Works, please see this&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/qc-cuny.libguides.com\/c.php?g=387623&amp;p=2629518\" target=\"_blank\">guide&nbsp;to Academic Works<\/a>, or contact&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"mailto:Nancy.Foasberg@qc.cuny.edu\" target=\"_blank\">Nancy.Foasberg@qc.cuny.edu<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>QC&nbsp;Research Highlights is a&nbsp;monthly&nbsp;blog&nbsp;series featuring&nbsp;work from Queens College&nbsp;(QC)&nbsp;authors in&nbsp;CUNY Academic Works.
