{"id":6777,"date":"2022-03-07T10:42:27","date_gmt":"2022-03-07T15:42:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/library.qc.cuny.edu\/?p=6777"},"modified":"2022-03-07T10:42:27","modified_gmt":"2022-03-07T15:42:27","slug":"qc-makerspace-two-exhibitions-of-maker-made-math-art-on-display","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.qc.cuny.edu\/library\/2022\/03\/07\/qc-makerspace-two-exhibitions-of-maker-made-math-art-on-display\/","title":{"rendered":"QC Makerspace &#8211; Two Exhibitions of Maker-Made Math Art on Display"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>If you&#8217;re at Rosenthal Library this semester, be sure to pad your visit with some time to view two display cases containing maker-made math art.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The contents of both vitrines were fabricated by students of <a href=\"https:\/\/qcpages.qc.cuny.edu\/~chanusa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Christopher Hanusa<\/a>, Professor of Mathematics, during the Fall&#8217;21 semester &#8211; students of MATH 128 &#8220;Mathematical Design&#8221; and MATH 250 &#8220;Mathematical Computing.&#8221; Both classes were also participants in the <a href=\"https:\/\/makesteamq.qc.cuny.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Make STEAM Q<\/a> project, an initiative supported by the National Science Foundation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sign for MATH 128 (the featured image seen above) reads, &#8220;This artwork was created digitally using math and software and then was realized physically using machines in the <a href=\"http:\/\/qcmaker.space\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Queens College Makerspace<\/a> including the laser cutter, embroidery machine, AxiDraw plotter, and 3D printer.&#8221; These excellent artworks showcase the diversity of output options available in the Makerspace in Rosenthal Library. This cabinet also contains a &#8220;tattoo&#8221; (on fake skin) that must be seen to be believed!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/library.qc.cuny.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/20211221_112858-1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6778\" width=\"322\" height=\"322\" \/><figcaption><em>MATH 250 &#8220;Mathematical Computing&#8221; Exhibit<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just down the hall, you&#8217;ll find the other display case for MATH 250. The sign reads, &#8220;The artwork was created algorithmically using the computational software <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wolfram.com\/mathematica\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Mathematica<\/em><\/a> and then 3D printed in steel, nylon, sandstone, and base metals by Shapeways.&#8221; Some plastic prints were also done in the QC Makerspace. And we cannot emphasize enough how cool it is that these objects were created <em>algorithmically<\/em>. They were not &#8216;designed&#8217; in the classic sense of the word &#8211; but instead created using algorithms and math!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I&#8217;m intentionally not showing close-ups of the art in order to encourage you to swing by and see it for yourself. Many of the details, the light refraction on metal, the markers layered by a robotic arm, must be seen in person to be truly appreciated.
