Spanish Culture and Civilization
This course will employ the model of cultural studies as it introduces students to the cultures of the Spanish –speaking world. Students will read and view texts from many fields and visit four museums in order to explore the ways in which Spain and Latin American countries have created myths of origin and have defined their national and ethnic identities. In QC Summer in Madrid, the course will focus mostly on Spain, but it will include materials about Colonial Latin America. Students will use the material studied in order to explore questions of how the arts and media function in society to transmit or question cultural and social values and ideas.
The course fulfills Perspectives goals in the area of Culture & Values.
