As the motto “We learn in order to serve” (Discimus ut serviamus) expresses the mission of Queens College, “We serve in order that students may learn” (Laboramus discipuli discant) is the call to action of the Academic Support Center.
Whether seeking to improve writing, gain English language proficiency, organize an oral presentation, or prepare for a CUNY exam, students who make use of the Academic Support Center will discover a variety of services geared to their needs. The center offers programs in the summer and during the January intersession to help prepare students who have not certified in basic skills for the CUNY exams that must be passed prior to beginning the first semester at the college. The center also provides tutoring services and administers the CUNY Assessment Tests. With its networked computers, study carrels, and tutors, the center is an appealing place to hone essential academic skills.
The Center's Academic Support Lab, College English as a Second Language (CESL) program, Testing Center, and Writing Center are conveniently located in Kiely Hall, as is the Math Lab, which is coordinated by the Mathematics Department.
Reflecting the college curriculum’s ambitious goals for student writing, the Writing Center helps students clarify, organize, and develop their ideas, improve their rhetorical mastery and language mechanics, and reinforces their strengths in writing. Students can make an appointment with a tutor, drop in, or get timely feedback on essays via our online tutoring service.
Queens College students come from more than 140 countries; the center’s credit and non-credit CESL courses are designed to assist those with limited proficiency in English. The Academic Support Lab offers both small-group instruction and individual tutoring. Other study skills workshops cover such topics as time management, note-taking, and organizing information. Through its immersion programs, the center offers help to students who have not passed one or more of the CUNY Assessment Tests.
