In today's highly competitive job market, the importance of doing everything in one's power to gain a competitive advantage cannot be understated. In addition to receiving superb grades, a student must also dedicate time to develop their leadership skills, professional skills and professional network by participating in internships and other professional programs while still in school. However, the search for internships and job opportunities prior to graduating from college can often times seem a bit overwhelming and preparing yourself to land one of these opportunities can become an additional class in of itself. The Queens College Office of Career Development & Internships has been a tremendous resource to me during my internship search. I was first introduced to the many services offered by the office when I attended an Internship Workshop. The Internship Workshop gave me an overview of the resources of the office which include its Internship database, Interviewing Preparation Workshops and advisors, who were more than willing to sit down with me One on One to help me identify what my key strengths and weaknesses were and how I could highlight my strengthens to help me obtain an internship.
I was introduced to the KPMG Discover program through my interaction with the office and decided to apply to the program because it was the perfect opportunity for an aspiring CPA, such as myself, to gain some insight into how it was to work at a Big 4 accounting firm. Prior to my interview, I scheduled an appointment with the Office of Career Development & Internships and had a one on one counselor session with Ms. Karen Casingal-Acampado. Karen was very helpful in helping me prepare for potential questions that could be asked during my interview. In addition, she gave me great advice on how to present my accomplishments and experience in a positive persuasive manner. As a result of the assistance given to me by the Office of Career Development and Internships, I have been accepted to the KPMG Discover Program. I would certainly encourage every student at Queens College to take advantage of the various resources of the Office of Career Development & Internships because they definitely help prepare you for the work force. You never know something you learn at their workshops can help you land your next job.
