President’s General Education Initiative

PERSPECTIVES ON THE LIBERAL ARTS AND SCIENCES COURSES

In an effort to support Faculty in the design of new courses and the redesign of existing courses within the contexts of the new General Education curriculum, the Teacher Scholar Grants provide funding that can be used for a range of resources. The following faculty members have been granted awards for the 2011 academic year in order to accomplish these goals:

I. Areas of Knowledge and Inquiry

• Gloria Fisk and Sari Altshuler: For the redesign of English 170W: Introduction to Literary Studies (Formerly known as ENG 150W), which can provide a "clearer bridge between writing in English 110 and writing for the major".

• Timothy Eaton: For the redesign of Geology 25: Natural Resources and the Environment, which is a large lecture course, with a pilot project to develop “asynchronous use of 21st century multimedia, and classroom interactive technologies.”

• Emily John: For the redesign of Music 008: Fairy Tales, Myths and Music as an introduction to musical interpretations of Greek myths and Western European fairy tales.

• Madhulika Khandelwal: For the development of Urban Studies 107: Urban Communities: The Local-Global Connections in Queens, a new Social Structures Perspectives course that will be offered in a Freshman Year Initiative community, and that will be an introduction to the diverse communities of Queens and the local/global issues they face.

• Pablo Tinio: For the development of a new perspectives course, "Creativity, Genius, and the World of Ideas", which will be offered in a Freshman Year Initiative community, and listed as a new cross-disciplinary offering of the Division of Education.

• Duncan Faherty: For the redesign of English 152: Works of American Literature- A course for non-majors in order to make better use of smart room technology and web-based resources as a way of teaching students to pay close attention to language and become more familiar with the reasons for the writer’s particular choice of language.

II.   Culminating Experience

• Maureen Connor and Gregory Sholette: For the development of a new Synthesis course open to upper-level undergraduates to participate in a project with the Queens Museum of Art (QMA) for their project, Corona Studio, a residency embedding artists in the heart of an ethnically diverse community in Queens.

• Katherine Profeta and Edisa Weeks: For the development of a new Synthesis course open to upper-level undergraduates who want to cross the disciplinary boundaries of dance and theatre.
