MAT Dual Certification


Bilingual Advanced Certificate Program 

This program provides school teachers already certified in their respective disciplines with a 15-credits sequence of courses that leads to the NYS Bilingual Education Extension and a Queens College Advanced Certificate Program. The bilingual education extension qualifies the candidates for positions as bilingual school teachers to work in the schools of the State of New York.

Admission Requirements and Prerequisites
To be admitted in the program candidates are required to:   

  1. Submit NYS Teacher Certificate
  2. Be proficient in a language other than English. This proficiency must be in the language in which they are seeking the Bilingual Extension. Candidates need to take a language proficiency test at Queens College or by using Face Time or Skype.
  3. Write a 500-800 word essay stating the interest and/or importance for becoming a bilingual teacher.  
  4. Submit GRE results.

The Bilingual Extension consists of five courses or fifteen credits. The courses are all offered online: ​​

EECE 761: Foundations of Bilingual Education and Bilingualism

EECE 763: Developing Language and Literacy in the Home Language (Spanish) or equivalent course EECE 791.3 for Chinese, Haitian, Arabic and Bengali

EECE 764: Instruction and Assessment across the Content Areas for Bilingual Learners

EECE 766: Educational Linguistics and Psycholinguistics

EECE 767: Pedagogical Practice in the Bilingual Classroom
