Secondary Education and Youth Services (SEYS) through its various programs offers three distinct paths that lead to either certification, a degree or both.
The Undergraduate Initial Certification Program entails a sequence of courses in a subject discipline along with courses in the department of SEYS. Students typically enter the education part of their studies when they are second semester sophomores and have completed a certain number of subject discipline courses (specific details are given under each SEYS department.) Students completing this program gain a Bachelors degree and an initial teaching certificate.
The Graduate Initial Certification Program is designed for students who already hold an undergraduate or graduate degree but who do not have the required courses to qualify for a teaching certificate. Graduates from this program gain initial certification.
The Master of Science in Education (MSED) Program is for students who already hold an initial certificate in a teaching discipline and who wish to pursue advanced studies in education. Graduates from this program gain an advanced certification and a MSED degree.
