AH-704, See Sections Below - QC QC Alcohol and Drug Abuse All prospective teachers graduating from Queens College must enroll in this three-hour New York State workshop. Topics include youth drug experimentation, teacher responsibilities, youth drug trends, tobacco use, alcohol use–binge drinking, marijuana use, inhalant use, hallucinogens, club drugs, methamphetamines, over-the-counter drugs, and prescription medications. A knowledge quiz will be administered after discussion of various abuse mechanisms. Open to teachers and teachers’ aides. Note: Late students will not be admitted (per NYS requirement). 3 hrs.

AS-650, See Sections Below Autism Students Seminar for New York State All prospective teachers seeking initial or professional state certification in special education must take this three-hour workshop in the needs of children with autism. This workshop covers the history of autism, its causes, characteristics, definitions, and prevalence in children by age and gender. Instructional methods for children with autism as well as behavior management, positive supports, collaborations within the school structure, parent-teacher interactions, and resource availability are covered. Open to teachers and teachers’ aides. Note: Late students will not be admitted (per NYS requirement). 3 hrs.

CC-107, See Sections Below - QC Child Abuse Identification and Reporting Seminar This seminar fulfills the New York State requirement for chiropractors, dental hygienists, dentists, optometrists, physicians, podiatrists, psychologists, pupil personnel services professionals, registered nurses, school administrators and supervisors, school district administrators, and teachers who are applying for or renewing a license, registration, certificate, or limited permit. Course covers physical and behavioral indicators of maltreatment, physical, or sexual abuse; behavioral and environmental characteristics of abusive parents or caretakers; and identification of responsibility for reporting child maltreatment or abuse, and when and how to do it. Graphic slides will be shown. Participants receive the required NYS Certificate of Completion. Please bring to class current license or certification number and registration receipt to receive Certificate of Completion. Note: Late students will not be admitted (per NYS requirement). 3 hrs.

CC-604, See Sections Below - QC QC School Safety Seminar All prospective teachers graduating from Queens College must enroll in this two-hour Queens College Division of Education-mandated workshop. Topics include school safety plans, fire and life safety drills, bomb threats, intruder drills, student suicide awareness, crisis intervention plans, sexual harassment, gang awareness, bullying prevention, and abducted students. Teacher strategies are discussed and a question-and-answer session is provided after review of various safety mechanisms. Open to teachers and teachers’ aides. Note: Late students will not be admitted (per NYS requirement). 2 hrs.

CC-600, See Sections Below - QC School Violence Prevention and Intervention Seminar New York State law requires applicants for a new or renewed license, registration, certificate, or limited permit to provide documentation of completing the required training in school violence prevention and intervention. This seminar has been approved by the NYS Education Department. Topics include identification of warning signs relating to violence and other troubling behaviors in children; statutes, regulations, and policies relating to a safe, nonviolent school climate; classroom management techniques to promote a nonviolent school climate and enhance learning; intervention techniques to address a school violence situation; and participating in an effective school/community process for students exhibiting violent behavior. Participants receive the required Certificate of Completion. Note: Late students will not be admitted (per NYS requirement). 3 hrs.
