Procedure for Technology Fee Proposals for 2009-2010

The deadline for pre-proposal requests for 2009-2010 is December 1, 2008. This provides time for the deans, Ken Lord, OCT, Campus Facilities, and Buildings and Grounds to consult with the requesting departments, determine the feasibility of project proposals, gauge their impact on electrical demand, ventilation, etc. The Technology Fee Committee can then consider the pre-proposal at its February 2009 meeting with accurate numbers for cost and time. Assuming the pre-proposal is approved, the department can then prepare, in consultation with Ken Lord, OCT, and other college offices, a full proposal for consideration by the Technology Fee committee in May 2009. A detailed schedule of events is provided below.

Departments are invited to submit requests for major new projects to be funded by the Tech Fee. Such projects could include major upgrades of, or completely new, computer labs, as well as other large initiatives which use instructional technology and electronic resources to improve teaching and learning.

To apply for Technology Fee funds, first review these principles and guidelines.

1.      Download the Pre-proposal outline form (Word document) most appropriate for the type of pre-proposal you are making and fill it out as completely as possible. Before proceeding, you may wish to consult with Dr. Kenneth Lord, the Assistant to the Provost for Educational Technology (kenneth.lord@qc.cuny.edu), to make an initial determination of the appropriateness of your idea with respect to the Tech Fee guidelines.

        * Existing Labs

        * Library

        * Software

2.      Download this Excel budget calculation spreadsheet and fill it out as completely as possible.

3.      Save each of these files with a name that starts with your department prefix (such as HIST, CMAL, PHYS) followed by "TechFee," such as MATHTechFee.doc and MATHTechFee.xls. If you are submitting more than one proposal, please number them as MUSICTechFee1.doc, MUSICTechFee2.doc, etc.

4.      Submit the files to Ken Lord who will arrange for distribution of the pre-proposal to your dean, OCT, and other offices as needed.

5.      The deadline for receiving proposals is December 1, 2008.

After the due date the pre-proposals will be reviewed by the Assistant to the Provost, OCT Campus Facilities, and Buildings and Grounds, with regard to timetables, budget, equipment, space and infrastructure. You may be contacted from time to time for additional information.

During the second week of February the Tech Fee Committee will review the pre-proposals and take action on approving them in concept. By April 6, those pre-proposals that are approved by the Tech Fee Committee will be perfected by the Assistant to the Provost and OCT, be given final approval by the department, and considered by the Tech Fee Committee during the first week of May. Once approved by the President and CUNY (by May 15), work on some projects may be scheduled to begin after July 1, the start of our fiscal year.
