Topic: Koreatowns and Digitalized Cultural Map

Lecturer: Professor Young Sang Yim at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies, Dept. of History and
                  Global Cultural Contents

Professor Young Sang Yim (임영상) from Hankuk University of Foreign Studies (Seoul, Korea) is one of the authorities on Korean culture in Korean enclaves in various Korean diasporas. He is also the former president of the Association for the Studies of Koreans Abroad, a major association of scholars in Korea studying overseas Koreans. Greatly interested in Korean culture in overseas Korean enclaves, he is currently visiting New York City to explore and examine Korean business districts in Flushing, Queens and Koreatown (K-town) in Manhattan.

Professor Yim will give a lecture on different Korean enclaves around the world. Additionally, he will show and tell us about Koreatowns and Koreans’ lifestyles in Yanbian, Tokyo, and Osaka through pictures he has collected and taken. To supplement his lecture, Professor Yim will exhibit and explain digitalized cultural maps that he is working on of Korean enclaves. Professor Yim will explain how these digital cultural maps can be created by using photos, stories, and histories of the different Korean enclaves.
