Fred Buell

Klapper Hall, Room 631
Phone: 718-997-4666

Research Interests

Professor Buell's current research project is an invited essay entitled "Oil Culture" for a special issue The Journal of American Studies on the cultural impacts of oil. This essay is part of a larger project on the relationships between energy, technology and culture. My chief concerns now are to theorize these relationships and to explore specific cultural histories of the fossil fuel era.

Professor Buell's most recent book is From Apocalypse to Way of Life: Environmental Crisis in the American Century." New York: Routledge, 2004.

His most recent publication is "A Short History of Environmental Apocalypse," the lead essay in Future Ethics: Climate Change and Apocalyptic Imagination ed. Stefan Skrimshire. London: Continuum, 2010.
