Who may enter:
To be eligible to participate in the contest you must be a current Queens College student or Queens College alumnus who studied abroad while enrolled at Queens College.
What to enter:
Photographs must have been taken by the entrant.
Only photographs taken during your study abroad program may be entered.
Photographs may not be digitally or otherwise enhanced or altered. Minor adjustments, including spotting, dodging and burning, sharpening, contrast and slight color adjustment are acceptable. Do not submit offensive photographs.
How to enter:
Please submit photographs as an email attachment to the following address:

We will not accept photographs submitted through U.S. or campus mail.
Each entrant may submit no more than one photograph.
Include the following information with your photograph:
• Entrant’s name;
• Year the photograph was taken;
• Where (country and city) the photograph was taken;
• Year you will graduate or year you graduated Queens College; and
• Brief description of photograph.
High-quality scans of non-digital photographs are acceptable (see Scanning Specs below). Digital photographs should be taken at the highest resolution possible. Photographs must be in a .jpeg, .jpg, png or tif format. Files submitted may not be larger than (8Mb). The 30 finalists may be asked to submit a high-resolution file, if we deem your submitted file of not high enough quality.
Queens College reserves the right to disqualify entries and/or contestants for any reason, including failure to submit, upon request, a high-resolution image.
If you are unsure if your photograph meets the specified requirements, please submit it and we will contact you if we have any questions.
Your Rights:
Except as described below, you will retain all rights in your photo.
By submitting your photograph, you represent that your submission represents exclusively your work and you grant to The City University of New York, including Queens College, the royalty-free, nonexclusive right, in perpetuity to:
- Use (including display) your photo on the Queens College website in connection with the contest and/or in support of the College’s mission;
- Include your photo in our Pictures of the World Photo Exhibit;
- Use your photograph in CUNY’s non-commercial communications (including CUNY-related use in news stories, newsletter, displays, web pages, and the like);
- Provide your photograph to other individuals and organizations for non-commercial use (including CUNY-related use in news stories, newsletters, displays, web pages, and the like);
- Use, in connection with the Contest, of your name, city, state, and country of residence in promotions and other publications; and
- Keep the files provided, and to archive the images on CD or in other electronic forms.
In addition, you agree to execute a written agreement regarding the use of your photograph.
We will credit all photographs with the photographer’s name as provided to us.
We will email you notification if your photo is selectedIf you are unsure if your photograph meets the specified requirements, please submit your photograph and we will contact you if we have any questions.
Entry deadline:
All entries must be received by October 2, 2012.
We will email you notification if your photo is selected as a finalist.
Judging:
The 1st round of judging will be conducted by the Queens College – Pictures of the World Committee. The committee will select approximately 30 photos that have high impact, strategic composition, effective lighting, creativity, color balance, and the power to tell a story. The second round will involve the Queens College community voting via email for their top 3 choices.
Prizes:
1st Prize: $250, 2nd Prize: $150, 3rd Prize: $50
Scanning Specifications
Below are our suggested scanning specifications for obtaining a high-quality scan.
35mm color slide or negative
Scanner should be set up to scan transparent materials.
- Choose source size of approx. 1.3 x .85 inches (software should auto-detect these exact dimensions)
- Choose target size same as original
- Choose resolution of 2400 dpi, 24-bit color (do NOT use 32- or 48-bit color)
- Save as jpg file
Color or black & white photograph
- Choose target size same as original
- For color photo, choose resolution of 300 dpi, 24-bit color (do NOT use 32- or 48-bit color)
- For black & white photo, choose resolution of 300 dpi, 8-bit grayscale (do NOT use 16-bit grayscale)
- Save as jpg file
