FLUSHING, NY, October 5, 2009 – As part of its annual rite of autumn, Queens College will hold its alumni homecoming celebration on Saturday and Sunday, October 17 and 18. The college has planned a full lineup of events and activities to welcome back alumni and their families, renew and make acquaintances and rekindle memories. Over 40% of QC’s 90,000 alumni are residents of Queens.
For the first event on Saturday at 7:30 pm, students and alumni will put their musicianship to the test as they compete in a Battle of the Bands on the 4th floor ballroom of the Student Union. The events on Sunday, from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm, will include a jazz brunch reception and welcome by QC President James Muyskens, two seminars given by prominent faculty, a performance of Leonard Bernstein’s Candide by the students of the Aaron Copland School of Music and a Home Run Derby played on the campus’ softball field. Capping off the day, a light supper reception will be offered in the Atrium of Lefrak Concert Hall.
Throughout the weekend there will be guided tours of the campus and The Summit, QC’s new student residence hall, and visits with QC clubs, fraternities and sororities. Both the Art Center and the Godwin-Ternbach Museum will remain open during homecoming to present their latest art exhibitions. Children who are accompanied by an adult can participate in a variety of free activities such as face-painting, balloon-making, story-telling and athletic games.
