Greek (Modern)

The Greek language encompasses thousands of years of history. Because of Greece’s formative impact on Western societies and the continued influence of its diaspora, students are drawn to the language for many reasons. Both heritage speakers and non-Greek students choose to learn the language in order to become acquainted with Greek culture, do research, or pursue studies in disciplines with roots in Hellenic culture such as philosophy, science, history, literature, art, archaeology, and medicine.

The college has more Greek students than any other American university. Students have access to the college’s 6,000 volumes on Hellenism, and the Center for Byzantine & Modern Greek Studies sponsors conferences, lectures, exhibits, and seminars. All students are encouraged also to explore the many cultural institutions in metropolitan New York where classical and modern Greek culture are celebrated with exhibitions, lectures, films, concerts, and other events.
